It started on the day he died.
Earth held so many colors, more colors than most planets he had been to or destroyed. But on the day his rival, his best friend, and the love of his life, died, the colors started to fade, one by one.
The fiery orange that his lost friend had so dearly loved and always wore was the first color to die. With it faded yellow, the gold that marked their ascension. He didn't notice at first, being too deep in grief to step long out of his room. But when he had, grey stood in the place of orange and yellow.
Greens became blue with the loss of yellow. Sunrises and sunsets became black that faded into grey, then blue, then back to grey and black.
Blue was an accurate description of his soul in the time after his friend's death. But even the blue shades of his grief darkened and died to a lonely grey. Now there was nothing left. It had taken time- years even- to get to this point, but now all the color was gone, both inside and out. Once he'd lost the last shades, he resigned himself to it, just waiting to die too.
But then, one day... he saw color again.
The world and people around him were a grey blur, nothing of importance, nothing he cared for. His wife had dragged his miserable self to... wherever they were. Head low, eyes wandering slowly around, he again wished for it all to end. Without him, there was no purpose. No real reason for him to remain.
"You have to keep an eye out," his wife sighed impatiently. "You're going to miss your surprise!"
He huffed softly, almost a laugh. Surprise? The only thing that would surprise him now would be someone finally snapping his neck. But that wouldn't be a bad surprise. He sighed and finally looked up at the shifting masses of grey. He couldn't focus on much, nor had he been able to for some time. He was all but blind now, everything mashing mockingly into one still or moving image.
Someone suddenly grabbed him by the shoulders- Gohan, he realized- and turned him quickly. He was about to snarl out a hateful comment when his eyes locked onto a blinding... color.
He blinked, shocked and baffled. Then a jolt of both nauseating realization and heart-stopping adrenaline slammed into him. Orange! And- And blue! What? No, it couldn't be!
He turned and saw the shocked Prince, his mouth falling open, mirroring Vegeta's own expression. "Vegeta!" he cried, rushing forward to him. Unable to process what was happening, Vegeta's legs had buckled beneath him and Gohan was the only thing keeping him up now. But when he got close, life returned to both Vegeta's muscles and his eyes. Every single lost color came back in a dizzying burst of light. Simultaneously he launched forward and he landed in Goku's powerful arms.
Between delighted shrieks of laughter was nearly incoherent babbles of joy from both Goku and Vegeta. Neither was surprised when their mouths met, passionate and needy but explosively loving.
"Oh, Vegeta," Goku breathed, holding the other Saiyan like he'd never let go. "Oh, I missed you. I'm so- I'm so, so sorry."
"It's ok." Vegeta ran his fingers through Goku's soft hair- so soft, he missed it so much.
"Thank you for holding on," Goku said. "I can't imagine what it must have been like, being alone. I... I don't think I could have done it. You were so strong for me."
Vegeta buried his face into the crook of Goku's neck. "There was so many days when I just... lay there, wanting join you. But I knew that you wouldn't want me to give up. So somehow I pushed on, just for you."
Goku lifted his face up and kissed him again. "You're amazing," he whispered. "So amazing."
"Will you stay?" Vegeta asked, clinging to him even tighter. "Can you stay?"
"I'm staying forever," Goku swore. "I'll never ever leave you again. I could never put you through that again. It was bad enough the first time."
Vegeta nodded. Forever was a long time, but maybe they make it for forever if they were together.
