Rivals

First they were enemies. Fire and venom spewed constantly between them. He was hateful, and the other was merciful despite that hate.

Then they were rivals. The intense dislike had faded somewhat. Competitive and determined, it was a never ending struggle to see who was the best, and who was lesser.

But one day, they found themselves as friends, no longer fighting to dominate the other, but to encourage and have fun with. Their families hardly saw them at all except when they staggered home, eyes with shining with a playful bloodlust that was unlocked only for each other.

After almost forty years of knowing each other, in the midst of a raging thunderstorm and an even wilder battle, they shared their first kiss. They kept their love hidden for another year, but when their aging wives passed on, the two were free to fully express themselves, much to the surprise- and support- of their friends.

In the end, however, even the closest of lovers can still be rivals.
