*Part... five??? of The Fall!*
The only way to safely and harmlessly bind a demon was with a phenomenon known as Heaven's Rays. It was an exposure to a concentrated light that had come in contact with the Holy Spirit or one of Its counterparts. It entrapped demons- any demon, even a Prince- in a hypnotic daze.
That was how they kept Vegeta in check. I stood close by, watching as he stared helplessly into the mass of holy light. I don't know why, but something about Heaven's Rays made me nervous. Something that had that kind of power scared me guess. Even though only the purest could harness its power, I couldn't help but wonder what it could be used for in the wrong hands.
Raphael set his hand gently to Vegeta's forehead to make sure that it was not having an ill effect on him. He nodded to himself. "He's alright."
"Good," Gabriel sighed. "I was worried. One time we... accidentally hurt someone very badly with the Rays. I don't want it to happen again."
Vegeta shivered, his body shifting slightly in a feeble attempt to escape the influence of the Rays. He let his eyes slowly fall closed, reluctantly giving in. Though I had never felt the exposure of Heaven's Rays myself, I was told that it was a shockingly pleasurable experience for demon and angel alike. Supposedly the Rays almost forced the subject into what mortals experience as a "high", leaving them mostly unable to function until the exposure was removed. I didn't exactly have a powerful urge to check it out for myself.
Raphael sat in front of Vegeta, just out of the Rays' light. "Vegeta... what is happening? Certainly it cannot be you with such power. That is not in your calling, to have power over light. That is not your designation. That was-"
"The M- Morning Star's..." Vegeta forced out. Even to have the ability to speak while under the influence of the Rays was something only the most powerful could hope to have. "The... Beloved... of the Most High... Light Bringer..."
Raphael nodded once. "Yes. His and his alone. But he perished. Your master perished in the Last War." He paused, as if even the thought of the beautiful Fallen brought him great pain.
Vegeta's eyes closed again, faint traces of sorrow in his expression. So even he grieved for Lucifer. "Yesss... b- because of the... Son. Brother... against brother. But... my master... cannot be erased from the bonds of time..."
Gabriel stepped forward. "What do you mean?"
Vegeta shifted weakly, a faint laugh creeping out. "The All-Seer... sees nothing..." He laughed again, a little more himself as he once again fought the Rays. "Even the Father's... most powerful children... cannot see..."
Raphael stood, looking anxious. "What do you speak of, tenebris?"
"I'll not be a canary today..." Vegeta whispered, still chuckling. His struggles against the Rays had exhausted him and he was beginning to lose himself to it.
Michael, hovering in the shadows, made a noise of frustration as Vegeta fell quiet, lost now in Heaven's Rays. "We'll have to weaken the Rays, otherwise we won't get anything out of him. He'll give in eventually."
Raphael nodded. He stood, suddenly looking his countless years. He sighed wearily and turned to leave. "We'll return later after he's rested. And we will not be able to weaken the Rays, Michael; I dare not risk his escape."
"Of course, brother," Michael replied, joining Raphael. "Are you alright?"
Raphael smiled weakly and nodded. "I need meditation and prayer. Blessings, my brother." He kissed Michael's cheek and gestured Gabriel and myself over to receive the same love. He gifted us both with a soft kiss to the cheek before flying away.
I watched after him, worried. I'd never seen Raphael look so tired. So scared and helpless. I looked back to Vegeta. It was... terrifying, just thinking about how much power he had, and how weak and small I was in comparison. I looked up into coelum's skies. Was I destined to fail, to fall? Was that His plan for me? The thought was like a blow to the chest and I struggled to breathe for a moment, which my elders immediately noticed.
Michael turned swiftly, his eyes landing on me. "Goku? What's wrong?"
I was dizzy and terrified to my core. What if this was it? What if I fell?
Gabriel reached out and set his hands to make sure I wouldn't collapse. "Goku, what's wrong? Are you alright?"
I shook my head. I was panicking and I couldn't stop. I pitched forward into Gabriel's arms, breaking down into sobs as soon as I landed against his chest. Immediately his arms curled around me protectively and he whispered in the holy tongue to try to soothe me. It helped but still I cried and trembled in his embrace. Michael joined us, his wings reaching out to shield us despite our actual safety. Being in his mighty shadow, safe from the outside, also aided in calming me. Slowly my panic faded until I simply rested wearily in Gabriel's arms.
Gabriel gently dried my tears. "Goku, dear... Do you want to talk about it, love?"
I nodded weakly. "I... I'm so afraid. Gabriel, what if... what if His plan for me ends badly? What if He means for me to fall?"
Both angels froze, slight fear coming into their eyes. Michael knelt down with us, taking my tear stained face in his hands. "No, no, no, darling, you can't think like that. That's how it begins. You can't doubt yourself, you can't doubt Him."
"Michael's right" Gabriel agreed. "It's ok to be afraid. We are too. But we can't doubt Them. It is never in His plan for one of His children to fall. Our choices alter Their work. You cannot let doubt infect your heart, dear one." He set a warm hand to my chest, then pulled me into another embrace. "Everything will be alright."
I nodded, already feeling better.
Unbeknownst to me, Vegeta had somehow heard our conversation, heard my doubt and terror, and softly laughed.
Maybe not the Father's plan.
But maybe his master's.
