*Merman!Goku and Siren!Vegeta*

When young merfolk came of age, they received the permission to mark their bodies with symbols of strength and ability, such as faster swimming or higher stamina, which would aid them in their quest for higher power. Many merfolk were content to hold a handful of tattoos across their skin; it was enough to protect themselves and their families from threats out of the reefs that most merfolk called home.

But in the family of the greatest leader of the merfolk, Bardock of Third Hold, was a young merchild by the name of Kakarrot. Enraptured by the power the tattoos promised, he began to draw patterns in the sand of the tattoos he hoped to mark himself with when he came of age. His mother aided him in his little fantasies despite his father's warnings of what such strength would bring to the reefs. She would draw for him many pictures of what they imagined him to look like when he was grown, and he would study the tattoos and what each would do for him, and draw it- many times- across the pictures his mother would make for him until every single pattern was perfectly made to cover almost every patch of skin from the waist up, since the tattoos could not be placed upon his scales.

His father would shake his head. "With power such as that," he would say, "you may have to leave the reef. Is that what you want?"

Kakarrot would feel sad at his father's words, but he would reply without fail, "I want to be the strongest thing in the ocean so that nothing can hurt us."

One day in his wanderings just on the safe borders out of the reef, he saw a small, dark creature dashing about and chasing small fish. He saw arms lash out ferociously- hungrily?- at the fish that seemed just out of his grasp. A small black tail whipped angrily through the water as he was evaded once more. Kakarrot called out to the creature, "Hello?"

The small creature turned swiftly, looking afraid and ready to flee. Kakarrot held out a hand. "No, wait, it's ok!" He drew his hand back, tilting his head curiously. "You're... You're not like me..." He'd thought that this thing was another merchild, but he wasn't. "Hi, I'm Kakarrot," he said, swimming slowly closer. "What's your name?"

The small creature also tilted his head, seeming to relax and grow friendlier. Kakarrot noticed light shimmer and reflect off what looked like a little gem embedded in his forehead, just between his eyes. "My name is Vegeta," he replied, and although he was easily Kakarrot's own age, his voice was hoarse, as if he spoke through sand caught in his throat. "What are you?"

"I was about to ask you that," Kakarrot admitted. "I'm a merman. Well..." He looked down. "A merchild, anyway."

"Oh!" Vegeta smiled. "I'm a siren. I've never met a merman before." He pointed out into the deeper, darker waters of the coastal shelf. "I live way out there. I was exploring and I found this place. Do you live here or are you exploring too?"

"I live here," Kakarrot replied, nodding back toward the colorful reefs. "I'm not allowed to go out there because of sharks."

"Sharks are scary. I almost got eaten by one once. My daddy saved me though."

Kakarrot looked closer at the small jewel. "What's that on your forehead?"

Vegeta blinked and touch the gem. "Oh, my gem? We sirens put gems in our body to get stronger. This is my first one. When I'm all grown up, I want a thousand of them so I'll be the strongest siren ever!" Vegeta stated proudly.

Kakarrot grinned. "Merfolk do something kinda like that too! We have these tattoos that we put on our skin, and they make us stronger. I want a bunch of them so I can be strong too!"

"I bet you're really strong," Vegeta said, crossing his arms. "Wanna see who's stronger?"

"Yeah!" Kakarrot chirped, waving his tail excitedly.
