*Another "I hate you, but duck it, let's fall in love, yeah?"*

"Why does this race has so many weird customs and holidays!?" Vegeta barked at Bulma. Two years he'd been on Earth, and she was suddenly expecting him to join in on everything. "I'm not one of you! Why should I even pretend!? Keep me out of it."

"Oh, come on, Vegeta!" Bulma sighed. "Listen. Everyone's going to be there and I want you to get to know them." Her eyes sparkled suddenly. "Besides... Goku will be there."

Vegeta glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. The thought of seeing the other Saiyan made his heart pound with a combination of bloodlust and need. His last few heats had been terrible. The beast of a man they called Goku had awoken a desire to mate that he'd carefully hidden. It was so powerful that he had gone into heat the day after they'd met- which was almost a month and a half before his normal cycle.

Bulma came closer. She whispered something in his ear that would have sounded vaguely intriguing, if not his attraction towards Goku. He could tell she seemed surprised that he let her this close, and that he hadn't yet backhanded her for speaking to him in such a fashion.  He growled and stalked away. "Fine, I'll come to your stupid party..."

Bulma looked very pleased with herself, but she hadn't succeeded in the way she thought she had.

Goku's eyes never once landed on his wife. Everyone assumed that he was simply keeping an eye on the lonesome Saiyan hanging back in the dark corners of the room, but he just... couldn't look away. It was obvious that Vegeta was still not used to Earth's temperature, for he shivered and huddled tighter into the corner despite it being almost sixty degrees in the building. Outside, on the last night of the year, it was a startling and bitter negative four degrees.

Vegeta desperately wished that he was back in his gravity chamber. At least it was comfortable in there. He was freezing! There was a fire, but there were also people over there. Bulma had insisted that he socialize, but he was getting enough dirty looks from where he was; no sense in making things worse. He felt surprisingly lonely. He glanced at a clock.

Nine thirty. Really...?

Vegeta groaned. Bulma had said something about midnight. He hated humans and their stupid holidays and their stupid new year and their stupid everything.

"Vegeta?"

The Prince looked up and almost fell down. Goku stood only a few feet away from him. His heart stopped for a moment, then it's rhythm returned with an explosion of power and hormones. What the hell? It wasn't even the right season for him to be going into heat! What was this!?

"You... look a little lonely over here," Goku murmured, not making eye contact. "Don't spend the whole time by yourself. I... I know you don't like us very much, but I, for one, would like to get to know you."

It was several moments before Vegeta could find the strength to speak. "I'm not wanted here, Kakarrot. Your friends have made it obvious. It's better if I stay over here and don't start a fight."

"But you're freezing over here, Vegeta," said Goku more adamantly. "I can see you shivering from across the room. Come over to the fire; it's a lot warmer." He nodded for Vegeta to follow him, and somehow he knew the Prince would.

Vegeta found his feet doing things he didn't necessarily want them to. Slowly he crept after Goku, and his every movement was taken into account by everyone else in the room. He was suddenly extremely shy and came to a halt. Goku looked over his shoulder, smiling encouragingly. That small, heartfelt action spurred Vegeta onward.
