*A post-apocalyptic AU!*
Vegeta pressed into the bushes, huffing as he released his jaw, which allowed his dead prey to land in the grass. He pushed himself up slowly, his eyes flicking over the yellowed fields. The wind made the plants sway beautifully, but it brought with it a scent. He immediately came to attention. There was no way...
He crouched down again when a voice called out. He knew that smell. But what was it? He grabbed his prey once more and began to slink out of the field and back into the woods. He wasn't about to lose his dinner.
He heard the voices again- much closer- and growled loudly. He disliked signalling his position, but he was hoping that whatever was there would choose not to pick a fight. He turned to see what exactly was harassing him.
Two shocked faces, male and female, were watching him. They called out together, high and loud. Not good. Vegeta turned and took off into the trees. He heard them again and scaled a tree when he thought he was far enough away.
But he hadn't lost them. There they were. He growled and gripped the dead animal held in his teeth tighter. Oh come on...
Goku noticed the feral look in Vegeta's eyes and paused. "Vegeta, hey. It's us!"
Bulma, who was with him, also saw the massive change in Vegeta. "Something's wrong. He looks completely wild." She frowned. "What happened to you, Vegeta?"
Vegeta growled at the two again, climbing a little higher. He was hungry, goddammit. He just wanted to eat. He'd have to ignore them and hope they wouldn't try to climb up as well. Neatly he began to tear away the small animal's fur, tossing the scraps to the side. Thankfully he'd mostly bled out the body, so he could more cleanly enjoy his meal.
Bulma tilted her head. "Fascinating. He's completely feral, Goku. Do you see what he has? He's been hunting to survive." She grinned. "Let's lure him down. I bet he's starving if he's just got that little thing."
"Looks like a rabbit," Goku commented, but he followed Bulma away from the tree. "Do you want me to go hunt something so we can get him down?"
"Yeah. He isn't utilizing any of his ki, not even for flying. I was wondering why he didn't just fly away from us." She continued to watch Vegeta. "Do you know anything about Saiyans going feral after injuries or illnesses or situations? I know he was pretty badly wounded when we saw him last."
Goku shrugged, unpleasant memories of the past few months creeping into his mind. None of them knew what he happened... First had come the earthquakes, followed by the toxic pulses in the air that had sunk painfully into Goku's bones. So many people had died... The only reason Bulma survived was because she had managed to get into the gravity room downstairs. Now they were alone... "I don't know. Whatever happened hurt me pretty bad, and it probably caught him as off guard as it did us. He was out training when it hit."
Bulma watched Vegeta for a few more moments. "I'll stay here and keep an eye on him. You go see if you can find something."
Goku nodded and flew away. He let himself think as he searched. The landscape of most of Earth had changed, and it those changes came some nasty weather for months. The skies seemed to be settling finally, although the color of everything had been altered by whatever diaster had hit. The sky had faded into a strange greenish color and took the rest of the world with it. It made sunrises a powerful thing to see; a fiery emerald blazing along the horizon.
Goku shook himself out of his thoughts. He had to find food for Vegeta. How so many animals had survived was a marvel and a blessing. Goku rested on a treetop- much like Vegeta, he realized with a soft chuckle- and fired a small ki ray at an elk slowly wandering through the woods. It was killed instantly and did not suffer, much to his relief. That poor rabbit of Vegeta's must have been terrified in its last moments.
Goku flew down and grabbed the carcass, flying back to where he'd left Bulma and Vegeta. The other Saiyan was still there. "Goku!" Bulma called. "Set it over there!" She pointed to a more open part of the field. Goku gave her a thumbs up and flew over, setting the elk down. "Now let's back off and see if he'll come down," she said when he returned to her side.
They went several hundred feet away, just watching to see what Vegeta would do. Bulma hoped that he wouldn't just run off.
Eventually Vegeta let himself drop down to the ground. He approached the elk cautiously, then began ripping the hide away with his elongated fangs and dig into the flesh.
Bulma crept closer. "Amazing. He's as wild as a stray dog. I'm gonna see how close he'll let me get!" She grinned back at Goku, who shook his head furiously.
"Are you crazy?" Goku hissed. "He'd eat you alive!"
"You'll save me," Bulma giggled. She went on. Vegeta halted in his eating, staring at Bulma suspiciously. "Shh, it's ok, Vegeta. It's me. You know me. It's ok."
Vegeta huffed, not seeing her as a threat, and carried on with his meal. Bulma sat down right on the other side of the elk, watching as he ate. "Oh, Vegeta..." she whispered. "Poor thing. You're so skinny. We're gonna take care of you, baby. Don't worry." She smiled back at Goku, who shook his head but smiles. They'd found him.
