*Part Three of Too Quiet! Enjoy!*
Vegeta was oddly used to the absolute silence in a matter of days. His accelerated healing allowed him to be up and moving in only two weeks, but Clarissa didn't yet want to do any testing because she was afraid of setting off a reaction in Vegeta's delicate nerves. "And I don't want you to worry about any kind of medical bill at all," Clarissa said to Bulma one day. "I'm paying for everything, and I won't hear any kind of protests. I don't even care if your insurance can cover it. I must have messed up and it's my fault that Vegeta lost his hearing. I want to help in any way I can to try to fix this."
Vegeta watched them, trying to figure out what they were saying. What they all, even Goku, didn't know was that this was not the first time his hearing had been impaired. It had never been this bad, but he had once lost most of his hearing for nearly a month due to an explosion that he was way too close to. Finally the idea of a healing tank had come to them and it was fixed, but this was much different than that...
He made out some of the message, but not much. Something touched his shoulder and, when he looked, he saw Goku smiling down at him. What are you doing, Vegeta?
Nothing. Just trying to figure out if I can lip-read. Did Clarissa say something about paying for the surgery?
She did. Goku grinned. Wow, you're really good at that. She said that she's not going to let Bulma pay for it because she feels that it's her fault that you can't hear. She wanted to help, so she said she'd cover it.
Oh, how sweet of her. She didn't have to, but it does take some pressure off of poor Bulma. I don't think she'd have it easy trying to pay for something like that, no matter how rich she is. Vegeta sat down and rubbed his ear. It had become a nervous habit and he just couldn't make himself stop. Something still wasn't right; the near psychosis was gone, but he'd get small headaches now and then and his left eye kept blurring.
You ok? Goku asked.
Headache, Vegeta grunted in reply. He rubbed his ear harder until Goku gently pulled his hand away.
Don't do that; you're making me anxious.
Sorry. Vegeta glanced out the window, his finger silently and restlessly tapping the windowsill. He wanted to get out of here. He wanted to go home, but Clarissa said that his condition was "too fragile" for him to make the trip. He wanted to spar and fight until his knuckles were raw and he was coughing blood. Anything to break out of this stifling place. The air in here was stale and distantly he could smell sickness.
Goku saw the restless need in Vegeta's eyes. He felt so sorry for him, and yet he didn't want him to be even worse off than he was, so they explicitly followed Clarissa's regime for Vegeta. Vegeta again felt as if he was losing his mind, but this time from boredom. Suddenly he felt a slight vibration all around him and he froze. He looked around, but the only other one who had reacted was Goku. The tall Saiyan was grinning, and he turned away to say something to Clarissa. Vegeta saw her say something about Goku being careful, then Goku said, Hey, let's go outside. Let me carry you; Clarissa doesn't want you to fly.
Kakarrot, where are we going?
Just out. Goku picked him up. He opened the window and slipped out that way. Vegeta suddenly realized what was happening. Dark clouds brewed above them, and he felt the vibration again. He pressed against Goku, slightly spooked. Thunder. It was thunder! He looked at Goku, who continued to grin. Can you feel it? It's really loud!
I can. It makes me tremble.
They flew directly into one of the massive clouds, and Vegeta sneezed at the sudden dampness. Just when he was wondering if they'd get struck by lightning, the sky around them lit up and scared the crap out of Vegeta. He clung to Goku as the electricity spiraled around them, kept away only by a slight discharge of ki from Goku. The thunder boomed, and Vegeta felt it shake him to the core. It was exhilarating. Vegeta gasped when the lightning flashed once more. They were sitting in a thunderhead. And it was alive around them. Sure, they'd fought in storms many times, but never before had they just hovered in the middle of an exploding, flashing cloud.
