*Vegeta suffers from a depressive episode and Goku tries to help him to a more bearable mindset.*

Vegeta had fallen in love with the ocean from the moment he'd laid eyes on it so many years ago. Nothing else on Earth compared to the sheer majesty each wave brought, whether roaring and crashing to its death upon the shore or whispering gently across warm sand. He felt so small sitting there, where the water could just reach his feet when it rushed up to him.

He sat with his knees brought up to his chest and held them there by wrapping his arms around his legs. Blue filled his vision from both the water and the sky, but it also filled the gaping cavity that seemed to sit like a stone in his chest. He sighed at the same time the little waves retreated with weary whispers, his voice perfectly matching the huff of the wind and the water on the sand.

Goku watched him from a distance. He knew well that Vegeta did not sense his presence. If he had, he would have broken out of his moody state and thrown on that beautiful- although hurtfully fake- smile and would have called out to him. Vegeta was in pain; that much had become very clear to him. Goku felt heartbroken that Vegeta had not disclosed his feelings to him so that he had an idea of how to help, but he also understood that Vegeta likely did not know himself how to speak of his darkening thoughts.

He had to try to get Vegeta to talk, even if it was only briefly. Goku moved out toward his mate with determined steps. The moment Vegeta detected him, he looked back and bared his teeth in a grin, but Goku shook his head and sat beside him. "Stop," he said gently, and the smile that did not reach Vegeta's eyes faltered. "Don't act. Talk to me, Vegeta. I know you're not ok."

Vegeta's smile died almost immediately and he looked back out over the ocean. "I guess I can't hide from you forever, can I?" He laughed a little. "I knew this would happen eventually." He leaned into Goku's shoulder with a sigh, smiling when Goku held him close. "You're right. I'm not ok. But there's no reason for it."

"There doesn't have to be a reason," Goku replied. He kissed Vegeta's cheek. "Sometimes you're just sad. And that's ok. Ya don't have to be happy all the time. Even I get down sometimes."

Vegeta closed his eyes, soaking in Goku's warmth. "It doesn't seem right though. Why would I just... be unhappy? This has been the best time of my life, Kakarrot. I have everything I could ever need. And I'm still unhappy." He looked up at his mate. "I don't know what to do."

Goku brushed his fingers through Vegeta's hair. "There's stuff that we might be able to fix to make you feel better," he said thoughtfully. "We haven't been training as much. That could help. I know ya haven't been really eating properly. Heh, we could both improve on that." They shared a laugh. Goku purred and continued. "It's little things sometimes, Vegeta. They can make ya feel different. I know if ya tried to sleep, you'd feel better."

"I can only sleep if you're there, Kakarrot; you know that." Vegeta crawled into Goku's lap- a pleasant surprise- and settled against him with a tiny huff. "And you sleep more during the night. That's when I'm awake most days now."

"It's hard going nocturnal though," Goku whined with a laugh. "I mean, I can try. If it makes ya sleep, I'll do it." He tilted his head and kissed Vegeta's neck softly. Hearing and loving the breathy sound Vegeta made, Goku whispered, "We haven't done this in a long time either... and I know that makes ya feel better."

"Tease." Vegeta purred and allowed Goku to continue. This felt... different than normal. The love in Goku's touch was as strong as ever, but there was a new level of passion in the way he worshipped Vegeta's body. Never once did Goku bite or let his more savage side show; every little kiss and lick was as gentle as if he was caring for a delicate animal. Somehow this tender treatment was even more arousing than the bestial beginnings of a normal tryst between them. Vegeta squirmed against him, their slight undulating movements only vaguely satisfying their urge to be as close together as they could be.

Goku giggled slightly then rolled them into the water. Both laughed and Vegeta whacked at his mischievous partner. "Baka!" He pushed at Goku, but the larger Saiyan would not be moved. "Come on, you overgrown child, I'm getting wet!"

"First of all, that's what she said." Vegeta's shocked expression that he'd made such a joke made Goku cackle. "Second, doesn't that mean we'll just have to go home and change?" he purred seductively, his tail swishing in the air.

Vegeta pulled him down for a kiss and grinned. "Gods, I love you," he whispered, and Goku saw genuine happiness in his eyes. He held Goku close to him, breathing, "And I suppose a long shower will be in order? Maybe even a massage."

Goku kissed him again and set his fingers to his forehead, taking them home.
