Goku snuggled in closer to Vegeta, letting his breath fall evenly across the other's neck. He tilted his head when Vegeta shifted. "Hey," he whispered. "You ok?" If Vegeta started moving too much but remained asleep, he'd have to wake him; he didn't want Vegeta to suffer long through a nightmare.
"Yeah, I'm ok," Vegeta murmured, shifting so that he could face his mate. He kept his focus away from Goku though.
Goku's hand gently tilted his chin up. The Prince's black eyes seemed troubled somehow. "Baby, what's wrong?" he asked him. His other hand swept through the soft, spiked locks.
Vegeta grinned nonchalantly through the tears standing in his eyes. Goku's heart pounded in worry. "I'm- No, I'm fine. Just..." He closed his eyes. "Just promise me you'll always hold my hand when I'm scared."
"Oh, Vegeta..." Goku whispered. "Yeah, I promise-" No sooner than he'd spoken, Vegeta's hand gripped his desperately. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, alarmed. "What are you scared of?"
"I'm-" Vegeta's voice cracked, and a tear slid down his cheek. "I'm scared- that if I let go, you'll-" He buried his face in Goku's shoulder. "You'll disappear..."
Goku couldn't breathe. He clung as tightly as he could to Vegeta. His hurriedly concocted promises that nothing would ever separate them, that he'd never leave him, and that he'd love him forever filled Vegeta's ears and heart.
But he only kept one of those promises.
With the dawn came the deadline that the android Cell had set for his Games.
