Vegeta lay stretched out on a grassy knoll, observing the flowing waves moonlight on the fields before him. He couldn't remember exactly how he'd gotten there, but it was a beautiful place and he felt like staying to enjoy the peace and quiet.
But, of course, it couldn't last long.
"Vegeta! There ya are!"
Vegeta sighed heavily and stood up. Of course Goku would come to break the silence of this quiet hiding place. "What do you want, Kakarrot?" he said, and his voice was little more than a heavy murmur. He'd been laying there for a while, so he was off-balanced for a moment.
Goku noticed the change in the little Prince. "Vegeta, are ya ok? Ya seem off."
Vegeta glanced away. "I'm... fine, Kakarrot. Leave me be. Can't a man ask for a few hours of peace?"
"Vegeta, you've been gone for days. Everyone is getting worried."
"Worried?" Vegeta laughed dryly. "About me? Kakarrot, I think you're on something."
"Well, I know you are," Goku snapped suddenly. Vegeta blinked, surprised. "What, ya think I can't look at ya and tell that you're high or something? Bulma is worried sick, Vegeta, and so am I! You're ruining yourself! Just talk to someone, talk to me. No one understands ya like I do."
He was right, and Vegeta knew it. Ever since the Potara Fusion... It was almost as if they were mates; they could practically read each other like books and knew what the other was going through. Vegeta found this new relationship too intrusive and intimate, so he'd found a way to block it, and Goku really had hit the nail on the head.
"Vegeta, please..."
The Prince looked up at the pleading whisper. Goku was holding back tears visibly. Vegeta could see the genuine interest and thoughtfulness concerned with his welfare, and it touched him deeply. All these years he thought that no one cared. Bulma just wanted him for his status, however null it may have been, and his skill in bed, even though he hadn't touched her in months. He had thought that Goku simply wanted him alive as a sparring partner, a living toy. But... it didn't seem that way now.
"I don't... I don't know what you're running away from," Goku whispered, "or what you're hiding from, but it's breaking my heart to watch ya do this, Vegeta. I want to help ya, but ya just keep pushing me away. Don't hide from me anymore. Please. I feel like I'm losing my best friend."
Vegeta's heart skipped a beat. His... best friend...? Had Goku just called him his best friend? The thought made his throat tighten and burn.
"Ya mean so much to me, Vegeta," Goku went on. He seemed to be summoning more courage to finally say what was on his mind. "Ever since I met ya, you've been my drive to get stronger. At first I thought that it was because I wanted to beat ya, but now I realize that all I ever wanted was to be able to stand beside ya, keep you strong, and make ya feel like you were worth something. Because ever since we Fused, I knew that you hate yourself. And I can't let ya feel that way, because you are such an amazing, wonderful person, Vegeta. So let me in. Please."
Vegeta was shocked to feel a tear rolling down his cheek. He touched his glove to his face. The tight bubble of stress and loathing in his chest popped, and with it went the last of his control. He ducked his head in shame as the hot tears came fast and hard now. How did Goku know him better than he knew himself?
Suddenly Goku was in front of him, turning his face up. The moonlight made his tears sparkle like diamonds. Goku's eyes, too, shone. Before he knew it, he was in that warm embrace, crying openly into Goku's chest. He felt so weak.
