Of course it was raining. It was as if the Earth itself knew of the fate of it's savior. Long after everyone else left, having paid their respects, a small figure still lay partly stretched out across the grave, like a dog that refused to let its master go. His face was soaked with rain and tears. He was frozen to the bone. But he couldn't leave.
He had promised. He had promised that he'd never leave. He had promised that he'd never die again.
"You lied," he whispered brokenly, resting his head against the tombstone. "Don't go where I can't follow." Already he could feel the rot in his body, the decay in his heart. It'd be a month, maybe less if he was lucky. Two days had drifted by already, both rainy and dark. The sun couldn't even break through the despair that had settled over the planet- and likely over the entire Universe.
"Who's going to stop them now?" he said to the grave. "I... You were the only one who could do it. Fight them. Win. I can't do that. I lose." He paused for a moment to regain control of his voice. "We need you. I need you. I'm dying. Can't you feel it? I am literally rotting from the inside out. Any day I'll just keel over and join you. I want to, but they need us. But I'm not doing this without you."
The rain grew steadier. He ran his fingers through the mud, feeling the soil. "I remember when you buried me. I made you promise that I'd never have to do the same. But you lied again. Mates can't bury each other."
Darkness descended.
"I can't believe you lied... Because you lied, I can't keep my promise. Remember? I said I'd never hurt myself again, or let myself go, or make you ashamed of me- even though you'd never say if I did. Well, because you lied, I guess I have to as well."
He shifted, curling up against the stone. "I'm staying here again, I suppose. She kept telling me to come inside, come inside. She doesn't get it." He ran his fingers over the cool stone. "I belong with you."
Two weeks. That's how long it took before she finally dragged his limp, weak body into the house. She didn't know what was wrong with him... until she saw the rot. His bones were as brittle as twigs, his muscles quickly turning into little more than mush. He was dying, and quickly.
When she went to check on him later, but he was gone. She looked out and again saw him laying on his grave. She went out and even before she got there, she knew he was dead.
She ran her fingers through his hair with a sigh. She looked at the tombstone, shaking her head. "Look what you've done," she whispered. "I tried, but it was you who killed him, Goku."
