*Part 3 of Free*
Goku fed Vegeta another mouthful of succulent meat, laughing when Vegeta all but missed his hand and made a fumbled attempt to correct it. He only succeeded in getting juices from the meat on his nose. "Gosh, ya can't be that hungry, Vegeta! I just fed ya an hour ago." Goku had taken to caring for Vegeta as though the blind, mostly deaf Prince was a baby bird. "Easy, don't bite me." He gave him another piece and smiled. Vegeta was completely helpless, but something else had changed. He didn't seem to mind being babied and cared for, which surprised Goku a lot.
Vegeta made a low whining sound and licked at Goku's fingers when the other Saiyan stopped feeding him. "There's no way you're still hungry," Goku said, shaking his head. "You've eaten more than me today, and that's saying something!" He did allow Vegeta to clumsily crawl into his lap and lay there, and together they enjoyed the outside warmth. It was just past noon and the sun was bearing down on them pleasantly.
Goku stroked Vegeta's hair and thought about the past few weeks. Ever since he had taken Vegeta away to nurse him back to health, he had initiated very little contact with any of his other friends and family. They knew by now that he had returned to the world of the living, but... he felt disconnected.
Vegeta bumped his head against Goku's shoulder, moving him out of his thoughts. Although Vegeta was horribly and permanently disfigured, Goku had come to terms with it and no longer found himself shivering or nervous when he looked at Vegeta's injuries. Part of him was glad that Vegeta could no longer see; the Prince would be devastated at the sight of what he had done to himself. But Goku felt that he too was to blame for Vegeta's current state.
If he hadn't left him, Vegeta wouldn't have been driven to attempt suicide. Goku knew how Vegeta felt about it and was shocked that he'd fallen so far into despair that he would go to those means. His loss had caused Vegeta that much pain?
Vegeta made an impatient sound, bumping Goku again. He tried to get up, but Goku had to catch him. His motor control was nearly gone. There was nothing to be done about it. Goku knew that eventually Vegeta would be too weak to even make these little attempts. He would have to be carried anywhere they went. It was a heartbreaking thought, but not even a senzu could save Vegeta at this point; his natural healing had already begun and a senzu could not undo what had been wrongly healed.
Goku stood, taking Vegeta with him. "What's up?" he asked in Vegeta's good ear. "Need something?"
Vegeta huffed and swung his head to the side, and he accidentally smacked Goku in the head, causing both to yelp in surprise. "Careful there!" Goku chuckled. "Take your time. Get it out slow."
Vegeta crooned, only forming bits and pieces of words. Goku listened as carefully as he could, but Vegeta could not voice what he wanted clearly. "Try again. I know ya can do it." Vegeta, growing frustrated, wiggled and tossed his head again. Goku managed to not get knocked on the head again and hushed him. "It's ok. One thing at a time, Vegeta."
Vegeta growled this time, able to express his feelings in that way at least. Goku knew that he wanted something. He just wished that Vegeta could say what. "Mmmm... nnn. Ssss..."
Goku could do nothing but take Vegeta back inside, although Vegeta did quiet down once he had. He set Vegeta down in his little blanket nest- safer than a raised bed at this point- and sat beside him. Vegeta whined and tried to crawl toward him again. Goku shook his head and moved closer so that Vegeta could snuggle up to his leg. But Vegeta didn't stop there. He fought and struggled, but he forced his wobbly arms to support him as he braced himself against Goku's thigh. Goku watched, shocked by Vegeta's actions. This was the first time he'd been able to do something of this caliber. Vegeta seemed to pitch forward slightly, but his face landed against Goku's chin lightly; it had been intentional.
Huffing, Vegeta shifted his head up again to Goku's cheek. Although his exposed upper teeth did lightly scrape Goku's skin, his tongue and lower lip met warmly in apology. Goku was frozen. He turned to look more fully at Vegeta, to ask what he was trying to do, but Vegeta stopped him by leaning heavily against him and using his now freed hand to search Goku's face. His fingertips brushed Goku's lips, and he immediately reached up, shifting his head so that he wouldn't scratch Goku with the open bone and teeth, and pushed his tongue against Goku's mouth.
Goku gasped, but allowed Vegeta to do as he wished. Vegeta was trying to kiss him! He held Vegeta's face still and fought the protesting wails just long enough to kiss him more comfortably. Vegeta went quiet, letting Goku have control so that there wouldn't be any unintentional biting on his own part. "T- teh- v-"
"Shh, shh, it's ok, don't try to talk right now," Goku soothed, stroking Vegeta's hair. Vegeta trembled in his arms and panted. The poor little Prince was already exhausted from the efforts he'd made. "Gods, Vegeta, I... All this time? This is why ya...?" He shook away the flashback of that day, when Vegeta tried to kill himself. "Ya love me. Me? I..." Goku held Vegeta close and kissed the good side of his face. "I didn't know. I didn't know; I'm so sorry."
Goku? Can you hear me? It was Dende's voice in his mind.
"Yes!" he called back. "What's up?"
I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but we can heal Vegeta!!!
"How?"
The Dragonballs, Goku! Gods, we're stupid!
Goku immediately picked up Vegeta, startling him. "I'm on my way! Sorry, Vegeta, just hang on. We're gonna fix ya!" He teleported to the Lookout and went in search of the young Guardian. Dende ran out to meet him. "Do we have all the Dragonballs?"
"No," Dende replied, "but we do have four of them. I'll take care of Vegeta until you come back with the other three."
Goku nodded and went into the white hallways. He slipped into one of the sleeping chambers and set Vegeta down, kissing his cheek. "Hang on, Vegeta. I'll be back real soon." He looked at Dende. "He may want something to eat or drink before I get back, and he has a tendency to try to move around a lot, so don't let him fall off the bed, ok?"
"I've got this, Goku," Dende said with a smile. "Hurry!"
Goku went back outside and flew off, rushing to Capsule Corps to fetch the Dragon Radar. "Bulma!" he called as he landed. He went down to her labs and found her there. "Bulma, I need the Dragon Radar, quick!"
The human looked surprised by his sudden appearance. "Goku? What are you doing here? Where's-?"
"No time, I need the radar!" Goku snagged it and teleported away with a quick, "Bye!" He found all three in less than two hours and then returned to the Lookout.
Back in the room where Vegeta lay, Dende held his hand to the side of Vegeta's head, studying what was inside. Much damage had been done to the poor Saiyan's brain, but Dende sensed that he was still functioning surprisingly well, although most of it was deeply internalized. They even had a nice little conversation- all in Vegeta's mind- until Goku returned. "Oh, there you are!" the young Namek said happily when Goku came in. "Vegeta missed you. He wants you to know he loves you and is very grateful for everything you've done."
Goku paused. "Huh? Ya talked to him?"
"I had to speak telepathically with him, but yes. Now let's fix him so that he can tell you himself what he wants to say!" Dende hopped up and took the Dragonballs from Goku while the Saiyan picked up Vegeta. They went outside and set all seven together.
Goku would never cease to be slightly awed by the sight of Shenron.
"Kami," Shenron greeted Dende. "What is your wish?"
"We wish that Vegeta's body be restored to perfect health!" Dende said. "And we would save our other wish."
"Very well. Your wish shall be granted." Shenron's eyes glowed brightly.
Vegeta was suddenly enveloped in a burst of light, which faded after a few moments. Goku grinned when he saw that Vegeta had been healed. "Vegeta!"
"Farewell!" Shenron disappeared into the sky, as did the orbs that had summoned him.
Goku's face was turned down by a startled but happy Vegeta. They kissed deeply, wiggling as close as they could. "Kakarrot," Vegeta gasped. "Kakarrot, gods-"
Goku held him close. "I'm not leaving you ever again," he promised. "Never again."
