Bloody Moonlight

Vegeta hung loosely in the monster's grip. How... How had it moved so fast? He felt it's cold, wet tongue lap across his bleeding form, but he couldn't tear his eyes away from his mate, laying facedown on the ground.

Goku was dead.

Vegeta could feel half his soul crumbling away in response to the sudden loss of his mate's heartbeat attached to his own. His body twitched as his own heart fell out of rhythm. Another long cut was placed right across his abdomen, but he didn't even feel it. His thoughts echoed emptily, somehow searching for Goku's voice. But it was no longer there. In the unnatural darkness and white moonlight, Goku's body looked almost like a statue, and his blood looked black.

Vegeta felt his body hit the ground. He couldn't even turn his head to look at Goku. Blood gushed out of his mouth when the creature, unseen in the darkness, stepped heavily on his face. Something in his back- likely his spine- ruptured, but again, he felt no pain. He felt like he was floating.

There were sudden flashes of light, and the creature was briefly illuminated, although Vegeta didn't see it. With a deep shriek, it turned tail and fled.

"Dad! Vegeta!" he heard Gohan scream. He heard and felt the young half-breed throw himself at his side. "Oh gods! Vegeta! No, no, Dad!? Dad!? Why is he so pale!? No! No!"

"Gohan, he's dead. And Vegeta's not far behind." Despite his cold words, Piccolo, who had spoken sounded heartbroken. "Just let him die."

Somehow Vegeta could feel Gohan's gentle hands supporting him. "No! Vegeta, please! You gotta- No, the cubs need you! Vegeta, they need you! Vegeta! Vegeta, look at me!"

Vegeta had no strength at all, not even enough to draw breath. His head hung limply, although his body shuddered with each weak gasp. The darkness surrounding them reached down to close his eyes.

Not yet. Kakarrot? Kaka?

Gohan laid him down, sobbing. The motion left Goku's body just in Vegeta's field of vision. His mind relaxed. Now it was ok.

And he died there in the bloody moonlight.
