Goku wearily opened the door and was very surprised to see one of his oldest, dearest friends. "Hey, Bulma!" he said, smiling for the first time in a long time. "I haven't seen you in ages."

The human smiled, but her eyes looked haunted. No one had yet gotten over the loss of the hardest piece of their family, and something in Goku told him that neither he nor Bulma ever would. "I... I found something really important, Goku. Like, him important."

Goku's breath caught in his throat. His eye burned at the thought of him alone... "W- What is it? What did you find?" He motioned her inside and sat down on the couch. He'd been living alone ever since he and Chichi had separated. Gohan, old enough to take care of himself, had "run off" with his mentor and started a family, and although he did come to visit his father, Goku was usually very much alone.

Gods, he could remember days when... he would just collapse on Goku's couch and sleep for eleven hours after one of their fights. While Goku had been very surprised at first, it quickly became a common thing. Bulma would playfully joke that he spent more time with Goku than at home, but then everyone realized that it was true. Goku had never been lonely then. But now...

Bulma handed him a small box. "I... I finally managed to make myself go into his room. It was, uh..." She laughed. "It was tidier than I thought it would be! I couldn't help it. I started looking through his things and I... found this. I didn't open it, I promise. It has your name on it, so I figured it must have been meant for you." She hugged the shocked Saiyan tightly and managed to fight her tears down. "I'll leave you alone. Something tells me you'll need the privacy. You guys really had something going there. It's been hard for everyone but... He was special to you. I know that. I swear he should have married you instead."

Goku looked at her, his surprise growing. How did she...? Bulma laughed, kissing his cheek. "Goku, honey... Everyone knew he was crazy about you. Kakarrot this and Kakarrot that." She looked up, sniffling. "God, I miss him. He talked about you all the time. He..." She bit her trembling lip. "He- he thought you were... He thought you were there with him. And-... Goku, he said things I never thought I'd hear. But it wasn't for me. It was for you. And he-" Her tears finally won. They slid down her cheeks even though she squeezed her eyes shut to stop them. "He cried... He cried and cried bec- because he- he knew he'd n- never see you again..." She sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "Vegeta...!" she wailed.

Goku suddenly brought her into a crushing embrace and broke with her. All the hurt and shock and grief came crashing back with the power of a hurricane. He suffocated on it. Bulma curled into his arms and cried like a child, and he was quickly following her deeper into grief. She'd lost her husband and he his best friend. Yet they'd been so much more. Enemies, friends, therapists some days, all but lovers in the end.

The last time Goku had seen him was the day that he got his first hug from the dark man. It was hesitant at first, as if he was afraid that Goku might push him away. He was very wrong, however. Goku had hugged him tightly, sensing that he needed it. They were both hot and filthy and sweaty and bloody, but it was the best hug ever. And it meant even more now.

It was less than twenty hours later that he was dead.

Goku tucked a few strands of Bulma's hair back in place, managing a smile. He kissed her forehead. "Thank-" His voice failed and he breathed deeply to tame it. "Thanks, Bulma. I love you, you know that, right?"

Bulma kissed his cheek again and nodded. "I love you too, honey. I'll see you later." She stood and left, making eye contact one last time.

Goku's eyes moved to the little cardboard box hesitantly. Some part of him wanted to throw it and run as far as he could, but he knew he had to know what was in it. It was from him after all. He picked it up and went into his room. Goku felt the need to crawl under his blankets and followed that instinct. He inhaled deeply... and opened it.
