AU fifties Bucky

You could not believe what the school had just announced on the intercom. Everyone was required to attend at least one dance in the school year. The announcement was made in spring. The only thing left was prom.

You really wouldn't go if it weren't a grade for gym. You really didn't want to be anywhere near all the greasers or even the socs. You just wanted to stay home and read your favorite books.

Since you mainly wore pants, you had plenty of dresses to choose from. You picked one that your mother had sewn pockets into. It was simple and elegant at the same time. Even though you didn't want to go, you're mom and dad took pictures of you to put in their scrapbook they made for you.

You asked your dad to drive you to the school mainly because if you drove, you would head to your favorite local bookstore. He agreed and you both listened to your favorite tunes.

"I know you don't want to be at prom y/n, but maybe you'll have fun. If anything, ask your teachers if you have to stay the whole time. If you don't, just call me, and I'll pick you up."

You nodded getting out of the car.

"Love you sweetie."

"You too Dad."

You walked in, and the music wasn't too loud. You tried to avoid the group of greasers as you made your way inside. You found a corner to sit in and began to read the book you were going to read in the peace of your room.

You made it nearly to the end when a voice interrupted.

"You the only one who isn't dancing."

You looked up trying to find the right words. "I know. I was enjoying my book before you interrupted."

"Gee, I was just wanting to know if ya wanted to dance. Sorry I didn't mean to flip your lid."

He was about to leave when you felt guilty. "Wait."

He turned around with a pouty lip. You almost thought it was... Cute. "I'm sorry. I... I shouldn't have been so harsh. I... I'll dance with you."

He grinned like the Cheshire cat and extended his hand to you. You hesitated to grab his hand.

He laughed. "Doll, you don't have anything to worry about. Yeah, I'm a greaser, but I'm not a bad one."

You giggled and took his hand. He lead you to the dance floor and began to dance with you.

"So, ya reading them Lord of the Rings books again?"

"Yes. How did you know?"

"We're in several classes together. I see you carry books around, those in particular. You read them during breaks."

You looked down feeling your face heat up. The fact that a handsome guy was paying attention to you was odd. No one in school really payed you much attention, so even though it was odd, you kind of liked it.

"I didn't embarrass you did I?"

You looked back up to him to notice his eyes were a beautiful blue. "No, you didn't embarrass me."

"Good. How's your knee?"

"... How do you know about my knee? I.. don't wear shorts to school."

H now took his turn to look down and blush. "I'm sorry I'm sounding like a creeper. We've lived on the same street since we were little."

"Oh. I... How did I never notice, and why didn't you say anything?"

He looked back up, and his face was still cherry red. It was too cute. "Well for one, you normally stay in your house or are reading and doing art. For me... I didn't think you'd want to be my friend. Me being a greaser and everything."

"Oh. Well I dunno, I think if we would've gotten to know each other, we could have been great friends. That doesn't mean we couldn't start now." You smiled.

He also smiled, and you really got a good look at him. His hair was obviously slicked back with gel. Unlike most of the other greasers, Bucky did happen to wear a nice tux. You felt slightly embarrassed for looking at him for such a long time, but you couldn't help it. He was probably the most handsome guy in the school, and you were just now noticing him.

"You okay? You got awful quiet."

Bucky got your attention and you looked back to him. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just can't believe I didn't realize we've been living on the same street all this time."

"It's no big deal doll. Besides, you said we'd be friends now."

You giggled looking back down momentarily. "Yeah, I did. Bucky, can I ask you somethin'?"

"Ya."

"Do you have a motorcycle? I've been kinda wanting to go on one."

"Yeah, I have a motorcycle. When prom is over, I can take you back home."

Your eyes lit up at the thought of ridding on a motorcycle. "Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm going to call my parents to let them know. I'll be back. I promise."

Bucky watched as you went to go find a phone. He couldn't believe you were dancing with him. Ever since he was little, he couldn't remember a day where he didn't have a crush on you. Now, you were dancing with him.

He watched as you quickly walked back to him.

"Dad said you could take me home. He also said you work at my favorite bookstore and help him find books for me. I seriously can't believe I haven't noticed you. I'm glad I'm noticing you now."

You both blushed as you continued to dance. The upbeat song ended, and you realized what the next song was. It was the first slow song that had been played in a while, and it was Paul Anka's Put Your Head on my Shoulder.

Instead of pulling away, you got even closer to him literally finding the confidence to put your head on his shoulder. He wrapped his arms around your waist, and you felt so comfortable being in his arms. You had no idea how you could be falling so hard for someone so fast.

You closed your eyes and felt him place his head on top of your own.

"Y/n... I wanna tell ya somethin'. Ever since I was little, and I saw you for the first time, I've had a crush on you. I didn't really know why I liked you so much at first, but I began to learn all the reasons why. Unfortunately like I said, I never thought of introducing myself. Now that your here with me, I can't help be feel like I needed to tell you this. I would really like  for you to be my gal, but if you don't, I totally understand."

You pulled away from him and looked into his eyes. They were so crisp and blue, filled with certainty and hope. It was crazy to think how this night had quickly progressed from not wanting to be there to realizing a guy who lived near you had feelings for you. Through all this you had begun to earn a crush for him. It just seemed like one event running in your dreams.

You didn't even know much about him. Your dad did talk highly of him however. Then you thought about how it was good to sometimes take risks, not that Bucky was a risk. You just didn't know what to do.

Then with your own newfound confidence you knew your answer.

"I'll be your gal Bucky as long as your my guy."

Bucky gently pulled you to him and you could just hear how happy he was when he spoke. "Of course I'll be your guy, doll. I care so much for you."

That was the beginning of the two highschool sweethearts. There story would last for generations.
