Bucky was finally free from the government. He wouldn't have to always be on the run. After the long process of earning his freedom, Bucky chose to live a more normal life.
He was able to get an actual apartment that was furnished and so much nicer than anything he'd had. The people who lived in the building for the most part were always nice. Bucky had been living there for about a year.
Then she came. Bucky at that point had been living there for six months. She lived on the same floor as him, so he'd run into her frequently. He leaned that she was very nice, but she was also terribly clumsy and shy.
The first few weeks, she didn't say anything. She just nodded or emoted her feelings. Bucky would always try to get her to talk, but he never could. Apparently she hadn't talked to anyone.
Weeks had passed, and Bucky heard a knock on the door. He opened it to reveal a basket of cookies, and a note was attached to it.
I'm sorry I haven't had the courage to properly introduce myself. Please know that I'll eventually talk. I hope you can forgive me. I hope you like cookies. I hope you have a great day.
Sincerely, y/n.The cookies actually tasted really well. He learned that he was the first to get a gift of cookies and day by day neighbors would get their own cookies. Everyone seemed to love those cookies, and they often wondered when y/n was going to talk.
Over the course of her being there, Bucky found himself gaining feelings for her. She was almost a mystery herself.
After two months, Bucky had finally heard her voice. She struggled to keep eye contact with him, but he was glad she finally had the courage to speak.
She continued to grow and talk, and Bucky felt like he saw her all the time. With that, he learned she could be very stubborn and clumsy. He would find her tripping on her own feet. She'd have so many groceries, and he'd offer to carry some. Each time she always politely decline. He would feel bad that he couldn't help, but he always made sure she got safely into her apartment.
Y/n finally was talking to just about everyone in the building. Her eye contact had improved, and Bucky still found reasons to like her more and more each day.
She had finally lived there half of the time he did. He heard that some of the people upstairs were planning on throwing a party for everyone, mainly y/n since she had always been so nice.
Bucky decided to help by getting plates, utensils, and cups. He got in the elevator, and the door was about to close when he heard a voice.
"Can you hold the door for me please?"
Bucky knew the voice belonged to one y/n. He held the open door button and was surprised to see her in a wheelchair. She managed to get in the elevator and waited for the door to close.
"Is it okay if I ask what happened?" Bucky finally spoke.
"Oh.. uh... I fell down some small stairs at the mall. I'm kinda embarrassed because they weren't really stairs. It was just two small steps. I didn't realize they were there until I was already on the ground."
"When did this happen?"
"Three days ago... I've stayed in my apartment for the previous two days.i guess it's a good thing I work at home."
Bucky sighed. "Has anyone stayed to help you?"
"No... I haven't asked anyone. I should've asked my parents." She looked down.
"You could've also asked your neighbors for help. We don't mind helping you. I don't mind helping you."
She nodded as the door opened. She quickly went to her door. "I'll... I'll try to keep that in mind Bucky."
"You promise?"
"Yeah I promise."
Later that evening, Bucky was trying to decide what to have for dinner when the alarm went off. He hurriedly locked his apartment and went downstairs till he was out of the building.
He noticed everyone was there except y/n. He sighed remembering she was in a wheelchair, and she wouldn't be able to climb down three flights of stairs.
Before anyone could say anything, he went back up to his floor. There she was in the stairwell with tears pooling down her cheeks. When she saw him standing in front of her, she actually looked up to him making eye contact.
"I'm going to help you okay. We're going to get out of here, and we're going to be safe."
Unfortunately, there actually was a fire on the floor above. Smoke was starting to get to their floor. Bucky took off his jacket telling her to use it to cover her mouth. He picked her up bridal style and began to take her downstairs. The whole time she kept her gaze on him.
He finally made it outside around the time the firefighters arrived. He finally looked down to notice she still was looking at him.
"You... You saved me."
"Well that's because you let me." Bucky grinned.
"I guess I did. I kept my promise, but you're still my hero. You could've just stayed down here, but you rescued me." She blushed.
"Of course I would go to help you. I care about you a lot y/n."
"I care about you too Bucky."
They both smiled, and Bucky found himself holding her a bit tighter. She continued to look at him with admiration and placed her head on his chest.
Bucky and y/n hadn't even realized that the fire had been put out. A neighbor told them that the fire was out and the floors were all okay except for the apartment the fire started in.
Bucky carried y/n back to her apartment. The wheelchair had been moved beside her door, and he put her down. She unlocked her door, and she looked up to him.
"Before you say anything, I promise to see if my mom or dad can come to help me tomorrow. Also, maybe we could go to the amusement park?"
Bucky couldn't help but blush. "Like a date?"
She grabbed his hand and squeezed it while laughing. "Yeah, a date."
"Okay. I'm looking forward to it."
Y/n went in her apartment and looked to Bucky one more time. "Me too, my hero."
She winked, and Bucky knew he was absolutely smitten with her.
