You stood at your locker, grabbing the textbooks you needed to study for tonight. Two of them were thick, the other wasn't. You closed your locker door to see Tommy Hagan with a condescending smirk on his face.

You raised your eyebrows as he placed his hand on a locker, leaning into it.

"Hey," he said.

You furrowed your brows, clutching your bag to your chest.

"Hey," you said, your tone coming off more like a question.

"How's it going?"

"Good, I guess."

You started walking past him, but he grabbed your backpack and held it out of reach.

"Is there a reason you're bothering me, Tommy?" you asked as Carol walked up behind him.

"We were hoping you'd give us the answers to the test in Smith's class tomorrow."

"What makes you think I have the answers?"

"You're smart."

"Even if I had them, why would I give them to you? It's not like you're very deserving of them anyway."

He raised his eyebrows and an entertained smirk formed on his lips. "What's that supposed to mean, doll?" he asked.

"You two are jerks. I'm not helping you." You reached out for your bag, which he tossed to Carol. "You do realize this is giving me less of a reason to help you, right?" you asked as you tried to grab your bag again.

She tossed it back to Tommy, and a game of monkey in the middle ensued, making you groan.

"If you don't agree to help us, we'll just keep your bag," Carol said when she caught it again. When it was in the air again, a foreign hand caught it, taking a step back.

You looked over to see Steve Harrington, who had healing cuts on his face.

"Hey, Harrington," Tommy said. "You wanna join in?"

He motioned for you to come closer, and you did. He handed you your bag, which you threw over your shoulder and gripped tightly.

"Nah, I'm good. I figured I'd just help her get her backpack back."

"Ah, come on. You used to be so much fun."

"I never harassed people for answers to a test. Just leave the girl alone." He turned to you. "Want me to walk you out?"

You had never talked to Steve before - at least not any longer than you had to. As far as you knew, he was a jerk. But you knew that Jonathan Byers beat the shit out of him, and since then he'd changed.

"Um... Sure."

He looked at Tommy and Carol again before walking off with you.

"I'm sorry about them," he said, shaking his head.

"It's fine."

"They're assholes. I don't know why they get away with the shit they do."

"They're just bullies. I'm used to it."

It was silent between you two as he walked you out to your car, making sure your bag was inside before speaking up.

"Listen, if they ever give you shit, just let me know."

You looked at him. "What happened to you?"

"What do you mean?"

"You used to be just like them."

He broke the eye contact. "I learned my lesson. Byers beat my ass because I was being a dick, and I guess I just... reflected on how I'd been acting. I realized I should've changed a long time ago, so I did."

You nodded with a small smile. "I'm glad you did."

"Me too. Like I said, if they do that shit again, just tell me and I'll take care of it."

"Thank you, Steve."

He smirked. "No problem. I'll see you around?"

"Yeah. See you around."

He turned and walked off, and you smiled to yourself. You looked over to see Tommy and Carol by his car staring you down, but you didn't care. You got in your car and drove home to study.
