Chapter Two
I was a bundle of nerves as we pulled into the parking lot of Berkeley. This was it. We were finally here, and I knew Mom must feel like the moment she'd worked for had finally come. It was beautiful on the outside, and I was sure the inside was just as amazing.
"Wow, this place is huge," Jay whistled.
Although both of us could have easily stayed with Mom at her house, we both stayed at the dorms for at least a semester, although probably not longer. I wanted a novel experience even though the thought frightened me so much I nearly begged Mom to let me stay there instead of coming here. I'd have a roommate to deal with and I just hoped we'd get along.
My phone vibrated in my pocket, and I smiled seeing a text from Mattie. Leave it to my best friend to know just what I needed to get me through this day. Her text amused me, as she should know I'd never be able to replace her. She had been my rock for so long, and I liked to think I was hers.
Mattie: Hey, college girl! Don't forget to FaceTime when you get settled in. I want to see what your dorm room looks like. Oh! And don't even think about making a new best friend while you're gone.
"Look at this place," I grinned.
"You'd think she's never been out of the house before," Jayden chuckled.
"Let your sister have her moment and have one for yourself. We all worked hard to get you here," Mom smiled.
She was right. We were closer than most families. Rather than tearing us apart, Dad's death had brought us closer together and I couldn't imagine him wanting it any other way. Jayden and I were incredibly close and were both incredibly close with our mom.
I smiled as we headed inside. The place was so much larger than my high school and although the thought of exploring made me tired just thinking about it; I knew I wanted to. Hopefully, Jayden would do it with me, and knowing him, he would. I pushed my anxiety aside, choosing instead to be excited.
"What hall are you in again?"
"Unit Four."
"Let's go there first, then."
I nodded, looking around for the building.
"Should we get a cart or something?" I asked, trying to remember the directions that I'd read at least a thousand times.
"No, I think we can handle it." Jay said.
"Your brother is right. We can carry your bags to your room. Let someone else have the cart." Mom said.
I nodded, continuing surveying everything as we approached my building.
"What room are you in?" Jayden asked.
"432."
"Okay, 440... Hmm, 430, 431, here we are."
"Well, this is it. This is your dorm room, baby." Mom smiled as we entered one of the many rooms in the building.
