Chapter Twenty-Eight

I was suddenly aware of a bedroom featuring a couple asleep hidden in the darkness. Why was I here? A loud crack of thunder sounded as lightning lit up the room through the window.

"Mommy! Daddy!" a little girl cried.

The couple both shifted, reacting to the child's cries. "I'll get her," a man said as he stood from the bed.

The woman sat up in bed as the man returned, carrying the small girl in his arms as she clung to him. He sat the little girl down on the bed and she went to her mom's arms as he got in beside her.

"It's okay, sweetheart. It's just a storm. The angels are bowling in heaven. Sounds like they're getting pretty competitive. Go to sleep, darling."

The little girl laid down in bed as her parents pulled the cover around her and they soon fell into a peaceful slumber. Such peace that I loved. The feel of something I wanted in my life. Peace and the life of a family. It was beautiful beyond compare.

"Britt, you are a foolish girl."

"Who's there?" I demanded, not knowing the voice.

The sweet scene before me was gone and replaced by complete darkness. I didn't like this at all. Where could I go to get away from this?

"You shouldn't spy on happy families. That is not a possibility for you."

"Where am I? How did you know where I was?"

"You couldn't hide from me for long. You never could."

"I don't know you," I protested.

"But I know you. A tiger can never truly change its stripes. For every butterfly, there's still that worthless caterpillar stuck inside them. You, my dear, are still that helpless little girl, no matter how many times you attempt to change."

"Come out and face me," I demanded.

"As you wish." The voice sounded from behind me.

I turned quickly, coming face to face with him. "Liam?"

"Why do you covet such trivial things?"

"You said I didn't know you."

He smiled. "I said that I knew you."

"Where are we?" I questioned, looking around.

"Wherever I want us to be." He answered with a knowing smirk.

"Liam—" He shocked me by grabbing my throat forcibly.

"What are you doing?"

"I could choke you a thousand times and you'd still stay the same person every single time." Liam was gone and in his place was possibly the most terrifying creature I'd ever seen. This monster before me was not human. Its skin was dark black and its teeth bared at me. The eyes were red as fire. I screamed as loud as I could when I heard a sickening crunch in my neck.
