Chapter Seven
I tried to focus on the board as Mrs. Pearcings was writing notes for an upcoming test, but I found it difficult to do as I wondered about Liam's odd behavior. He had been fine yesterday, but this morning he had a scowl written on his face, and not even Louis' jokes seemed to falter his mood. It was interesting, as it was weird. I didn't know what he could be upset about, but it wasn't my business. At least Louis and Niles were nice to me, and that kept the class interesting. I just couldn't help but wonder what was wrong with him.
Once more my ridiculous dream came to mind, but that's what it was, a dream. Liam wasn't going to assault me the way my dream implied. To some extent, such a dream made sense while the person did not. It was true I didn't know him well. It was also true I'd eagerly let him take me on a tour, despite what could happen. I had trusted someone I didn't know once, and it backfired. So why think it was acceptable to do it again? Even with someone like him.
The same could be said with Niles, and I thought back to what Candy had said about all of them. She didn't trust them and had offered to tell me why while also providing other information. I had no way of knowing if it would be true or not, but it was an option. Some things were just too weird.
Last Friday in L.A. came to mind. Liam had been angry, and they'd all been serious. They couldn't know a group of guys like that and not be doing something dangerous or highly illegal. I hadn't known those other guy's intentions, but I knew they weren't good. They all unsettled me.
Liam knew these people. Niles and the others knew these people. The girls knew these people and Ty had known Lily and reacted to her differently from the others. That all had to mean something. I realized Marcus and Ty were some forms of leaders in this group. The former had taunted me at one point, but largely they'd reigned the others in from whatever their intentions were.
I had a few ideas as to just what they'd been thinking. Mugging, assault, rape, murder. That was just the ones I could think of. Yet I'd been the only one petrified over what could happen. The others hadn't been as worried as me. Clary and Megan had seemed ready to go toe to toe with them, which also made no sense. How would they hope to do that, as we'd been outnumbered? Maybe Candy truly could provide me with some answers on the matter.
I thought of Liam's odd behavior again. Whatever was going on with him wasn't my business. I couldn't involve myself in someone else's problems when I wasn't even sure if there was one. Either way, I didn't make eye contact with him as class ended and I made my way out of the room, wanting to put some distance between us.
"Hey, Britt."
"Niles," I turned to him.
"You left this," he handed me my notebook.
"Thank you. I didn't even notice it was gone."
"You seemed to enjoy class today."
"Do you think I'm a nerd?"
