Chapter Twelve
I was never good at predicting things. After my conversation with Liam and then Megan, one thing seemed clear to me. I wasn't going to do what he said just because he said so, and I didn't intend to stand around and wait for him to come to my room. I doubted he'd stay out because Megan said so. I had only just hopped into bed as I pondered all that silently in the dark.
I fell asleep and then I was awakened by my cellphone going off. I groaned softly, feeling around for it in my sheets until I found it. I squinted, trying to see who was calling. The time on my phone read 2:34 in the morning and it was my mother calling me. I quickly sat up, answering it. Why was she calling me this late? Was she okay? Was Jayden all right?
"Mom?" I answered.
"Britt, sorry for calling so late, but I need you to meet your brother outside."
"What, why?" I was in a full-blown panic now.
"Baby, please, you and Jay need to hurry and come home. It's-it's important." She stammered.
I jumped out of bed. "All right, I'm on my way. Is Jayden waiting for me?"
"Yes, he's waiting right outside your dorm."
After throwing on a pair if sandals, I grabbed my dorm key and ran out of the room and down the hallway. I tried to be quiet, but running wasn't helping with that. I'm surprised Megan had slept through it. Either that or she woke up, and I just didn't notice. What was going on, anyway?
"I'm on my way, mom," I informed rushing down the stairs.
"Ok—" she got cut off by the line going dead.
I knew it was because I was in the stairwell and we didn't have service in this part of the dorms, but it didn't freak me out any less. What could have happened? Had Liam somehow found out where she lived? No, I doubt they'd do anything like that. At least I hoped they wouldn't. I still didn't know what they did, and that's what scared me.
I exited the dorms and rushed to Jayden's car, hopping in just as fast. He looked tired but also just as confused and worried as I was. I hadn't seen that look on his face since we found out Dad was sick. We hadn't understood everything back them but I recalled he knew more than me. Then it was on his face again as we sat in the hospital room during our last moments with Dad.
"Did Mom tell you what was going on?" I asked.
He shook his head. "No, you?" He questioned as he sped down the road.
"Nothing. I hope everything is okay."
"I'm sure it's nothing, sis."
"Why did she call us at two in the morning if it was nothing?"
"Okay, point taken. I was only trying to calm your nerves."
"Sorry, Jay. I'm just worried." He rested his hand on my thigh.
