Chapter: Thirty-Nine

I looked back at him in fear. This was a man somehow so powerful he ruled over angels and demons. I decided he couldn't be normal himself. He had to be an angel or demon instead. He was an attractive man, but I was learning good looks didn't make you any less scary. His accent was British, as smooth as silk, but he made no move to hide he was cruel. He knew me somehow already. Did he know I was trying to leave? Did he know what happened and was planning something? To punish me or my family? This could not be happening. Now I needed Niles.

Why would Mom invite him over? Well, I knew what that normally meant, but this was my mom. She hadn't dared to even have male friends since dad. I didn't know how to feel about that, but now was not the time. If Mom wanted male companionship, she could get it off social media. She did not need to pick this sorry excuse of a person.

"What's wrong? Cat got your tongue? I suppose it would be a little intimidating having the dean in your mum's home, right? I'm curious as to why you'd feel that way. Did you do something wrong, love?"

"I-I didn't do anything," I stuttered.

"You're too nervous not to have done something. I know way more than you think." His smirk widened.

"Stay away from my mom, from my family," I voiced.

"Ahh, yes, I understand how hard it is for a young girl to recognize her mother has to move on. I know all about your father. Your mums told me so many things. We have lovely chats."

Chats? What kind of chats?

"Victor, do you like apple pie?" Mom asked, coming into the room.

No, no, no, not the apple pie. She only made apple pie for special occasions. The special occasion might have been simply me, Jay, and Mattie coming over, but the bad feeling in my chest told me the special occasion was Victor. Just how long had they been talking? I wasn't around here to find out.

"Apple pie would be lovely." he smiled.

"Alright," she said, giving a dazzling smile.

Mom, do not smile at that freak!

Something was off here. No way would mom be this unguarded dean or no dean. She would be alone in the house with no man. She was always telling me about safety and this wasn't like her. For a moment, I considered he might have threatened her or something, but I saw no signs of that on her face. Had he done something? Had he used some form of power over her?

She nodded, walking back into the kitchen. "Lovely woman, your mum. She's made me feel very much at home here. She's an excellent hostess. So much more welcoming than you, her daughter."

"What do you want? Why are you here?" I asked.

"So inquisitive. You should know that gets you into trouble. Not to worry, I don't mind answering your questions for you. Your little heart has been so eager for knowledge, hasn't it? So much so that they can't keep you safe, but what else is new there? You haven't had time to process it, have you?"
