Chapter: Fifty-Six
I should have known better than to think another trip home would go off without a hitch, but that just wasn't possible. Actually, visiting my grandparents had been nice. Yet it was what happened before, during, and after the trip which served to make things worse. It started off innocently enough, with Niles coming to see me off at the airport. Sweet and innocent. He'd promised if he could get back early he would and I was pleased with that, but nothing could last.
It started once I'd gotten on the plane and beside Liam, who'd decided he was going to give me the silent treatment. Never mind the fact he'd spoken to me beforehand. Naturally, my mind wanted to think about the other stressful things in my life. Jay was in rehab and I hoped it was going well and this time he could kick the habit. I hoped Mattie could support him and still keep up with her college classes. Then there were the other things I had to worry about. The devil dating my mom. The possible gang wars and other fallen angels and demons.
So I decided to focus on Liam, which hadn't been much better. Being around him was like walking on eggshells. He might even be worse than Clary. At least Zeke was sort of being civil. It seemed like Liam switched personalities on a dime and I understood it was the curse. However, that didn't mean he could get angry over everything and say and do whatever he wanted.
He needed to understand that wasn't love. Perhaps he'd had little love in most of his human lives. At least in this one, he had a loving mother who loved him enough to die for him. Regardless, he had to have known love from his time in heaven. Regardless, his choosing to be silent frustrated me and I was certain one of us would break and it would likely be me.
It was because as soon as the plane took off; I sucked in a breath, trying not to show fear. He didn't comfort me, but I wanted him too badly. I wasn't sure if I was going to do it. The flight attendant ended up being the one to break the ice asking if I was okay and Liam had requested she bring us water. How nice I hadn't forgotten what his voice sounded like after all.
"Calm down," he finally spoke to me directly, putting a hand on mine.
"You're talking to me now?" I'd asked.
"Only because you're freaking out over there."
"You know these things creep me out."
"It won't be too long."
"Says you. You're nearly invincible."
"I would save you if anything went wrong."
"That doesn't save everyone else."
"Nothing will happen."
"You think you are so good at everything," I said sarcastically.
"Not everything, love."
"You know you were out of line earlier."
"You're really going to continue this?"
"Yes, because forgive and forget doesn't work with you. Doesn't matter what it is, you just keep doing it."
