Chapter: Fifty-Eight
In returning to California I was reminded once more it had become a home to me, Even if my grandparents and much older daughter weren't there. A whole family I hadn't met wasn't there. Lily, Tam, Max, Aubrey, and Megan were all waiting for me upon my return. I figured Louis or Aubrey had tipped them off. More good news followed as Jay completed treatment.
Mom and I were happy to have him back, and I noticed a difference. He seemed happier, more determined, healthier, and he also seemed closer to Mattie than ever. I had always known she'd be good for him and she'd proved that. Niles told me Aubrey saw revealing Jay felt guilty. He waited so long to get with Mattie and was trying to make it up to her. The child was amazing.
The same people were out waiting in the parking lot for us, and it was good to have a welcome committee like this. Lily seemed beyond excited as she embraced us both tightly as she spoke about how it had been. It really hadn't been that long, but I kind of agreed with her on that.
"What a heck of a welcoming committee. I like it," Mattie grinned.
"I've missed your enthusiasm. I chucked gratefully, returning her hug.
"So I've got something really cool I think you will want to be involved in, but I think I'll let you unpack first," she grinned.
Okay cool," I enthused, curious as to what she could have in mind.
"It's been way too long," Max smiled, patting Lily's back as she gave us her own hugs.
"It's been quiet without you all here," Tamron remarked after hugging me.
"That's changing now," Jay promised, patting him on the back.
"So you still interested in a position?" Tamron asked him.
"Position where?" I questioned.
"Marksans."
"Jay, you at a coffee shop?"
"I'm not really into fast food and Tamron here just happened to suggest it, and Greg agreed."
"So, you're going to be working with us?" I chuckled.
"And me," Lily revealed.
"Greg's hiring that many new people?" I wondered.
"Seasonal help, but he's actually talking of expanding Markan's to open in more locations. Victor is interested in it," Tamron said darkly.
"Victor," I grimaced.
"Oh wow, he's interested in coffee shops?"Mattie questioned.
"He's interested in a lot of things," Niles remarked.
"Oh, look, our favorite humans have returned!"
Not funny, Mr. Clark, not funny at all.
He had a smile on his face at his own joke as Henry stood by his side. They both shook Jay's hand in greeting before Louis welcomed Mattie and me with hugs and Henry followed suit after a moment's hesitation. Knowing Megan, she wouldn't care knowing well Henry had eyes only for her.
