Chapter: Forty-Five

We drove Max's car and I let Lily ride shotgun as I sat in the back. When we arrived at Marksans, it was closed, though I could tell the gang was all there. When we went to the door, Max pulled out a key and unlocked it for us to step inside. We greeted Greg, who mopped the floor, and Aubrey sat at a booth eating a muffin. She beamed as she ran to meet and hug each of us before returning to her spot and muffin. Tamron came out from the back to meet us.

"Come on back," He instructed.

The meeting room hadn't changed much, but it looked much nicer without the terrifying gang members present. Megan waved at us from her seat nearby. Somehow, I had the idea Henry had requested her to sit there. Clary and Louis were also seated with their feet up on the table. I decided to take a seat beside her as I waited for Liam to begin. His eyes landed on me before he started speaking.

"I've called you all here because of a few situations. As we're all aware, by now Britt was nearly attacked last night. Very likely sent by the one who's been attacking us. There's also the fact she ran into a guy called Ricky who has knowledge of who we are. It seems almost too perfect for them not to all be connected. We have all agreed Ricky is not a celestial, but he's not normal, either. Now Britt has also stated that he has some form of ability in causing illusions."

"What human has a gift?" Clary interrupted.

"Not one that I've ever heard of," Louis commented.

"Have we considered he's not human?" Henry asked.

"Of course, but that begs the question of what he is. We'd presumably know if he wasn't, but it isn't wise to assume things. There's a lot we don't know about heaven since we've fallen. We don't know who's done what, who's gone where. What could be going on?" Zeke answered.

"He seems as human as any other human, but also inhuman. It's strange which again begs the question of who or what is he," Niles mused.

"The truth is, we don't know. And sometimes the unknown is what we have to fear the most," Liam remarked.

"What does Victor want to do about it?"

"Well, Clary Victor keeps thinking he might seek him out. Or at least that's what he's telling us. You know well how he likes to screw with us."

"Don't we," Max rolled her eyes.

"Since he has this stupid fascination with her, why don't we just use her as bait?"

"Watch it, Clary. We don't intend to use anyone as bait," Liam interjected, as Niles squeezed my hand.

"She may end up serving that purpose, regardless. If Ricky or anyone else is targeting O'Neill, then they'll find her regardless, or at least attempt to. After all, she is the one he appeared to for a conversation. Out of everyone he could have approached, she's the one he chose."
