Chapter: Sixty

Slowly, the tension passed, and I took Niles's freezing hand again. A shiver ran through me and I looked up at him curiously. He looked down at me after a moment with a curious smile.

"What?" He asked.

I smiled up at him. "Your hands really cold," I explained.

He glanced down at our conjoined hands. "Sorry, love. Do you need me to let go?" He asked softly.

I tightened my hold on him. "No, keep holding my hand. I like it when you do that." I smiled up at him.

"That's good," he smiled.

I gazed at Liam as he walked ahead of us, an angry expression still on his face, though he'd seemed to have slightly calmed down. I really needed to stop starting things with him. He always seemed just a moment away from losing control and, as a matter of fact, he was. I'd do well to remember that. I looked at Louis and Max, who were having a conversation beside us.

I turned my attention back to Niles. "Why is your hand so cold?" I asked him.

He turned to me as we walked out of the dorms, the chilly morning air hitting me full force. "Sometimes my powers make my body cold if I start thinking something might happen." He explained as we walked down the sidewalk to the main building.

"You thought it would?"

He sighed. "Britt, you are going to have to stop provoking him. Though it's exciting to watch and rather amusing, and I know you sometimes can't help yourself, you could get hurt. You'd feel horrible, I'd feel horrible, and he'd feel horrible. No one wants that." He frowned at me.

I looked down at the ground. "I'm sorry." I apologized.

"Don't be sorry. Max has a huge problem with that too. You two are probably two of the bravest humans I've ever encountered."

"Brave or stupid?"

"Both, though, I find you very smart also." He grinned down at me.

"Thank you."

His smile flattered. "I'll be on that little mission tomorrow." My face fell as I met his beautiful blue eyes.

"The assassination?"

"Yes, so I'd like us to have a good day together after classes and your shift. We will have some time before I have to leave."

"Of course, we can. Why are you doing it so soon?"

"I got an email from Victor saying he'd like it done as soon as possible."

I didn't want Niles to have to bear this burden all by himself. He didn't want to kill, so why did Victor allow it? Because he was evil, of course. Looking into his eyes, I could tell it was painful for him to discuss it and I wanted to comfort him and, for once, I had nothing to say.
