Chapter-Fifty
When he shut the door, Niles put his hand gently on my face.
"You're calmer than I would have thought." He admitted.
"I feel like I should be freaking out, but right now I guess I'm just numb after everything."
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry for what, Niles, you tried to protect me."
"Yes, I always try, but I always fail. Something horrible could have happened and no one would have been able to do anything."
"Nothing happened. I'm fine."
"It could have. You know Zeke's right. We were both behaving extremely foolishly. When Liam began using his, my thoughts were to stop him from burning anything down. I've seen him do that before and it's not pretty. Anyway, I was planning to put the flames out, but I was also considering fighting him in my anger. If we hadn't, Victor and the others wouldn't have come."
"What happened, happened, right? Let's go to bed."
Niles followed me as we got under the covers, but I still couldn't sleep without having another discussion. I turned over to look at him.
"What is it?"
He noticed I had something to say.
"About earlier. I'm the one who's sorry. I was the one who was foolish to ask him to stay. I meant what I said earlier. I love you and I want to be with you. I want us to be really happy always. Not for you to be constantly worried about me leaving you for Liam or anyone else. It just won't happen."
He was quiet as he looked at me with soulful eyes.
"What is it?"
"It happened before Britt."
"What?"
"You've left me for him more than once."
"Niles I-
"You never do it without apologizing or feeling pain. Because you have always loved us both."
"What's it going to take to love only you?" I asked, sitting up.
"If I knew the answer to that, I would have had you do it long ago, love."
"Why haven't you given up on me?"
"I've tried, but it isn't so easy giving up on your true love."
How could I be his true love? Why weren't we allowed to pick our true loves?
"Why did you fall in love with me?"
"Such serious questions tonight."
"Don't I have a right to ask such questions?"
"Yes, but you've already missed enough of your sleep."
"I'm not a child."
"I'll tell you tomorrow."
