Chapter: Seventy-Five

"Liam," asked so quietly I knew if he didn't have good ears, he wouldn't have heard me.

Why are you still here?" he questioned, not turning to look at me.

"We might leave soon, but I wasn't ready just yet. I feel like being close by after everything that happened today," I explained.

"I see," he accepted but said nothing more.

"Why are you here?" I asked softly.

"Would you believe me if I told you I wasn't sure?" he finally turned to face me.

"Depends. Do you know why you're here or not?"

"Well, one of my best mates is about to welcome a baby with his typically strong halfling fiancee who is probably a little weaker than normal at the moment."

"So, why are you here?" I asked again quietly. "Do you know? Or just don't want to admit it?"

"Making sure everything is okay," he stated, closing his eyes just briefly before turning away again.

"Me too. I feel protective of them right now and I'm having trouble leaving them."

"So why are you out here right now?" he questioned.

"To make sure you're okay," I admitted, and he turned to face me again with an unreadable expression.

"I'm fine."

"You don't seem fine," I argued.

"That can be deceiving."

"I can see it bothers you, but what you did tonight was-

"I don't want to talk about this."

Of course, he didn't. He never did, but I did and I would, so I continued.

"What you did tonight was brave. You saved them. If you hadn't been the one to speak, I don't know if I could have done it."

"I didn't do anything, as I've already stated. Nobody saved her. Victor chose to spare her, as he was the one killing her in the first place."

"That's not true. He didn't spare either of them. You saw it. They were already dead, and he brought them back. Because of the sacrifice you made."

"Something he still chose to do when he didn't have to. He just decides what was convenient for him. He decided she and the baby were both worth living. That they were useful to him. I doubt he'd have killed her without having Nashua there to watch. Henry wouldn't have been enough. That's just how he does things. Swell guy that one. Besides, her powers are useful."

"How was he able to do that to her when he didn't even touch her and wasn't in the room yet?"

"He has plenty of powers. I'd say considering he'd already touched her earlier, it was when he'd put some of his power on her to use for later."
