Chapter Twenty
After Liam dropped me off, I headed to my room. But as I neared the door, I realized something. I checked my pocket. My phone was gone. I'd left it at Marksans. So I walked all the way back. My feet were hurting, and I was out of breath, but I made it. I jiggled the door and Tamron came over to answer it.
His eyes widened. "Britt, what are you doing here?"
"I forgot my phone." I stepped inside and he shut the door behind me.
"Well, get it and get out of here."
"Why? Has the meeting started already?"
"Yeah, so you need to leave."
I heard who I thought were Henry and Louis speaking, and I heard unfamiliar voices. I felt like I needed to leave, as Tamron said. Yet this was also my chance to learn more about them. Weirdly, it was like I felt drawn to go in there and see what's going on. I pictured a lot of scary and shady people there.
"Britt, you really need to go. I have to serve them coffee, but I can't do that until you leave."
"Let me help you bring them coffee."
"Brittany, that is a terrible idea. No way."
"Why not?"
"There's a reason they wanted you gone."
"Yet they're going to send you back there?"
"That's different."
"It is not. Now either we go back together or I just walk in there."
"You are not walking in there."
"Not alone if you go with me."
"They told you to leave."
"And I did, but came back. They weren't specific."
"You don't want to see those people."
"Probably not, but I'm curious."
"Fine, but try to keep your head down and not look at anyone."
He pointed to some cups, and I picked them up, following him to the back. He opened the door with his elbow and walked in and I followed suit, not even an inch away from him. All the chattering came to a halt as we entered the room. I kept my head down, trying my best to shield my face with my hair. It didn't work very well, as I spotted everyone. My eyes glanced first at the familiar people in the room. All the guys and Clary's expressions went from brief surprise to anger. I was going to be in trouble with them when this was over.
Here I was, and they were definitely going to be upset with me. Their gazes were passive once more, but I knew that was because of the others in the room. The others, who were a whole other issue. Knowing I was already attracting attention, I looked at the table, placing the coffee down. I should have listened to Tamron. I should have listened to Liam, but I'd done neither.
