Chapter Nineteen

So he had a soft spot for her. That's nice to know. It's nice to know he wasn't completely heartless. He may not like me, but he did like Lily and that's something.

"Lily? She's your girlfriend, right?" Mattie asked.

"No, we don't really have a label. We just... are." he shrugged, throwing his shirt back on.

"Now, show me, O'Neill." I rolled my eyes at him.

I turned my back to him and swiftly moved my tank top strap to the side, making my shoulder tattoo visible.

"It's nice and your others?" he questioned. I looked at him over my shoulder and continued to show him all my other tattoos. Stopping at the cross on my wrist. He took my wrist in his hand, shocking me. He studied the ink before letting my wrist go.

"You're a Christian?"

I nodded. "Yeah, why?"

"No reason. I just didn't peg you for the religious type." He shrugged.

I glanced over at Megan, who averted her eyes. Max shrugged, too, turning her attention to Mattie.

"Don't let the tattoos and piercings fool you. Britt, here, has always been a church-going girl. She and Jayden both used to go all the time." Mattie stated.

"What made you stop?" Zeke asked.

Why was he suddenly so interested in my life? Did Liam put him up to this? If he did, I couldn't figure out why. When I didn't answer, he looked at Mattie for answers, but she only shook her head.

"Not my place to say why." Is all she said.

"My dad," I muttered quietly.

"Your dad?" He asked, wide-eyed.

"Yeah, when he died, we kind of lost our faith. Well, I did."

"You've gained it back?"

"I think so," I answered.

We were all quiet before Mattie spoke up. "So you guys are a thing and you have a tattoo tribute for her, but you're not official?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"It's complicated."

"She has a thing for Jay," I blurted.

"Britt," she said, blushing.

"Oh, do you really?" Max asked.

"I knew it. The way he looks at you," Megan enthused.

"No, he doesn't," she chuckled.

"Yes, he does."

"Women," Zeke muttered.

"What's that mean?" Megan questioned.

"You're all so hung up on this idealistic love."

"What's wrong with that?" I asked.
