Chapter: Forty-One

Life is nothing but a game.

And I'm afraid of losing.

"Britt?"

"I'm fine," I turned to Liam.

"He'll be fine. If Tamron was alright, then you know Louis will. If he weren't, we would know."

"Okay, "I frowned.

"I thought the drive over would help, but I can see you're still worried."

"Yeah, I can't help it."

"I know. It's hard to comprehend, but our kind isn't as fragile as humans."

"But there are things out there who can hurt you, too."

"Yes, some things out there are capable but thinking about that now won't do any good."

"We can't see him until later?"

"It's best we don't. I have some things to take care of first, and our resident healer needs to concentrate. Henry's been unusually protective of her lately, so he would likely prefer that as well. So I thought a visit to see Tamron might suffice for now. You wanted to visit again, right?"

"Yeah."

"Then that's what we'll do."

We pulled up to Marksan's, and I almost jumped out, but then I looked back at him. "Are you going in?"

"I was planning on it. Would you rather I didn't?"

"I know you apologized, but I don't know if Tamron and Max would want to see you."

"Oh, the more reason to go in."

I glared at him

"I'll be on my best behavior. I always am."

"Let's go," I groaned.

I watched him like a hawk as we walked inside. It was closed today, and it didn't seem as if Greg or Aubrey were here. With so many serious things going on, that was a good thing. I was sorry innocent Aubrey knew that Liam had hurt her cousin. She couldn't have understood everything, but I couldn't believe she'd been as calm as she had. Although Max had confessed through text, Aubrey had said she was mad at him a little. I wondered if Liam knew or if he cared.

We walked upstairs and Max smiled when she saw me, but it faltered when she eyed Liam. "He's not awake yet, but Aubrey says he should wake up sometime today, so I'm just waiting," she said softly.

"Where are Aubrey and Greg?" I asked.

"He's in the next town over getting some supplies for the shop, and Aubrey is at a candy store with Lily."

"Sounds about right. She does love candy. So how's he look?" I asked carefully.

"Even better than he did yesterday. Everything seems to be healing nicely. Megan says so."
