Chapter Eight

Liam escorted me back to the dorms, and I fought to keep my cool. I couldn't believe what Candy and Carter had told me, but they had some solid evidence. The thought of Liam, Niles, any of them being involved in all those disappearances, was strange. Yet weren't they all acting weird, anyway? Niles had confirmed they were in a gang, after all. Perhaps I was in danger.

Then there were the others. Max, Tamron, Megan, Lily. Were they really a part of this, or were they in danger as well? Perhaps it wasn't that they excused whatever was going on. Maybe they had been threatened with staying and not revealing their secrets. What If I revealed the truth? Would I go missing like all the others had? Did he know what I had been doing? Should I fear for my life?

"Who were your friends?" Liam questioned.

"What do you mean?" I asked, as my heart raced.

"You were talking to two people in there. Care to share their names?"

How did he know that? He couldn't have seen us, could he? Niles was the one I'd ran into outside the restaurant, not Liam.

"No, I mean, it's really not a big deal."

"If it wasn't a big deal, you would just tell me."

"Why would you want to know? Why is that a big deal?"

"I suppose it isn't until you make it that way."

"What are you talking about?"

"If it's not a big deal, you'd just say it."

"Their names were Carter and Candy. I don't know them well."

"Yet you were having dinner with them. Strange, isn't it?"

"Not really. I just wanted to make some new friends. You know, since I don't have many," I fumbled.

"That's such a change when you've been so shy."

"You encouraged me to make friends."

"With the right people. I don't know this Candy although maybe I should introduce myself, but I know Carter. He's not someone you want to make friends with, trust me," he said, staring ahead.

"Why not?"

"You can't trust anything he says."

"These days I don't know who I can trust." I blurted, then pursed my lips, my eyes widening.

Why did I say that?

"What did they say to you?"

"Nothing."

"You sat the entire time and didn't talk?"

"They didn't say anything you'd find interesting."

"I doubt that."
