Chapter: Sixty-Three
"Well, is it too late for us to eat something?" Victor asked.
"No, I'll serve you," Max offered, and Tamron looked ready to protest.
"No need dear. I've heard you've found your recent freedom to be enlightening.
"No, I'll get you a plate. Coffee?" Greg asked.
"You know me very well, Greg. We've known each other for a long time, haven't we?"
"Yes, we have."
"Too long, I'd say," Louis spoke up.
"Perhaps," Victor allowed. Mom gave Jay a hug before coming over to embrace me. Niles let go of my hand for her to do so. I wrapped my arms around her frame, peaking over her shoulder at Victor.
"Anything I can do to help?" Mom asked.
"Why don't you and Mattie go help Lily in the kitchen? We should clean up," Zeke said. Obviously, he was attempting to get Lily out of Victor's presence, but I was thankful he was doing the same for Mom and Mattie. Maybe he did have more of a heart for others than he let on.
"Of course. Lead the way?" Mom asked.
"Yeah, let's go," Lily said, plastering a smile on her face.
"How'd I get stuck going?" Mattie complained as she walked after them.
"Maybe you should go too," Tamron suggested to Max.
"No, I'm staying with you," she insisted.
"Actually Greg, why don't we let the children serve us tonight? I know you must be elated to have your wife back after so long. She's a beauty. Such a natural beauty, much like Trisha." He smirked at me.
"I'll get it. Don't mind it at all," Tamron said, pulling Max along with him.
"Jay, could you go help the women in the kitchen? I think there are some high dishes they might have trouble putting up," Niles asked.
"Oh yeah, sure," he said in confusion. Apparently, it was send everyone to the kitchen night, but I wasn't complaining. I wanted as many of us away from Victor as I could get.
"Now what are you really doing here, Victor?" Liam demanded.
"Relax lad. I already explained that to you when I shouldn't be explaining anything to you."
"This was a special occasion that didn't require your intrusion," Niles said.
"A celebration is exactly why I needed to be present tonight. You know I didn't have to allow any engagements, any children, any relationships at all. I've been very kind in doing so."
"You came here deliberately because you knew there were people being kept from you," Louis commented.
"Yes, I thought it was high time I met them. To have Greg and Tamron so indebted to be, but not to know Susan just wouldn't do. A child like Aubrey? With her gift, I needed to know who she was. Just as I will when the infant is born. I think it's high time they knew about me as well. Now, who else am I yet to meet? Oh yes, how about Dear Eleanor and her family?"
