I smiled sadly, sitting beside Sirius at the wedding of Lily Evans and James Potter. It had been almost a year since Sirius' brother, my boyfriend, Regulus Black had gone missing, being presumed dead. Due to the shared trauma of losing the same person so recently, we had agreed on sticking together for emotional support, especially since Sirius had just lost the only member of his family who truly understood him, as well as his father. The only biological, immediate family he had left was his horrible mother.
Sirius stood up from beside me as we watched Lily and James dance. James had nodded over to Sirius, smiling brightly for him to join the pair on the dancefloor. My black haired companion held his hand out to me with a smile."Care to dance?" I looked to Lily and she nodded, letting me know that it was okay. She looked so beautiful...So happy...A soft smile crossed my lips and I nodded to Sirius, standing up and taking his hand before following him to the floor.
As we danced, I spoke.
"You're so much like he was...Yet so different..."
"What do you mean?" Sirius asked. As James' sister, I saw Sirius more as a brother since he had basically been adopted by my family, so I was used to being around him, seeing him around the house, hanging out with him and James. I shook my head, sighing as we spun gently with a shrug to try and dismiss the subject.
"A person can tell you were brothers, no matter how different you were..." Our dancing slowed for a moment as Sirius tried to recognise what I was saying. "You had similarities. Hair colour, eye colour, face shape...You both had righteous intentions."
"How were we different?" Sirius asked quietly.
"Regulus behaved." I teased, causing Sirius to purposefully try and do a wrong step, making me trip a little. "Hey." I hissed. "You had different personalities. You were the rebellious one, who messed around with his friends." The Black nodded, correcting our dancing steps once more until Lily and I switched partners in a swift, flawless movement. "James." I greeted with a smile, only his smile fell a little.
"Why are you crying?" He asked, lifting me by my waist while my hands were planted on his shoulders. I shook my head.
"I just miss him." James nodded and when my feet touched the ground, he pressed a kiss to the top of my head.
"We'll get you through it, March." I slowly nodded, Lily and I switching once more. James liked to call me March because my animagus was a Hare. During school, I had joined them on that adventure to help Remus, who was stood to the side of the room speaking to Professor McGonagall. I had become a Marauder, technically, and while the others were Moony, Padfoot, Prongs, and Wormtail, I was sweet little March, after the March Hare in Alice in Wonderland.
"So, differences?" Sirius smirked, wanting to know the differences between him and his younger brother.
"Regulus was quiet...he liked to keep to himself. He was hard to befriend...But, he followed after his older brother." Sirius tilted his head, not aware of this. I laughed at his face, he was confused, but curious. "He caused trouble, although more from the shadows, not in the limelight like you."
"He...caused trouble? He never would, he was always scared of what mum would do to him." I shook my head with a reminiscent smile.
"I remember when he first cast his patronus-"
"He cast one?" I nodded, tears welling in my eyes as I remembered the moment. It had broken Regulus' heart, but it filled mine with hope for him and his brother.
"We were in his dorm, and I was teaching him, because you had taught me..." I smiled, tears streaming down my cheeks as my eyes met Sirius'. "It was a silver dog, just like yours." In that moment, I saw Sirius' heart break at the revelations. The song came to a stop and I smiled sadly. "He idolised you, Sirius. I just thought you should know." He slowly nodded and I was quick to send my brother and his new wife a smile before leaving the room and going to sit on the steps outside.
As I left the building, I spotted movement across the road. I squinted my eyes to try and see more clearly, until a person stumbled out of the bushes, out of breath, like they'd been running. My hand slowly slipped from the door handle, my eyes never leaving this person, out of pure curiosity. I watched as they brushed off their clothes after having caught their balance before releasing a deep breath and looking around the area they were. Short black hair, black jeans, black converse, an untucked, messy grey dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a black tie loosely hanging around his neck under the shirts collar. I took a few steps forwards in surprise, wide eyed and my lips slightly parted. Quietly wandering down the buildings steps, I never let my eyes leave this man. He finally stopped looking around when he saw movement out of the corner of his eye, turning his head to look at me. He was down the street a little bit, not immediately in front of me, but far enough away that I could see him and he could see me. We both froze where we stood.
"R-Reg...ulus?" I whispered, finally reaching the pathway instead of the steps. The adult turned his body to face my direction, forcing his eyes to try and focus in the low light. Every emotion hit me like a fucking truck and I sucked in a sharp breath. "Regulus." I was certain of it. I quickly looked down the road, each side, because I was about to sprint across this main road in heels. And I did exactly that, willing to weave through cars and buses in order to reach him, even if I had to run down the road a little bit. "Regulus!" I screamed from outside of Lily and James' wedding venue. The boy had finally managed to pinpoint me. I ran across the road, almost getting hit, twice, before running along the road and onto the path.
"(N/n)?" Regulus began walking over to me, becoming increasingly frantic and speeding up until he had managed to grab my waist and stop me from running, immediately pulling me into his hold. My arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him into a tight hug.
"You little shit." I cried into his shoulder as his grip on my tightened, his own face buried in my shoulder. "You can't just leave like that..." Regulus chuckled weakly, holding me tighter. "You have no idea how much we missed you-"
"We...?" I nodded, pulling away from him and glancing behind us, over to the building I had come from, only to see Sirius stood there in surprise with James and Lily, and Remus by his side. James and Lily were smiling brightly.
"Sirius. James, everyone." I smiled softly. "We knew what you were trying to do." Regulus smiled and gently set a hand on my jaw, leaning down to my height and carefully pressing his lips to mine. I smiled and returned the gesture.
