I felt my throat tighten as I sat at a random table towards the back of the Great Hall, clenching my jaw.

The Hogwarts Valentines Ball.

It happened every year, and I usually went with my friends because they weren't necessarily interested in girls, just pranks and mischief...so when they all reached an age where they began to actually feel, and want to get to know girls, or sleep around, I began to drift away because I felt like I was being left behind.

James Potter was dancing gracefully with his fellow Head of the student body, Lily Evans, his one and only. It was a couple I supported greatly, having been the one to finally persuade Lily to go out with him.

Sirius Black was a similar story, although not as relationship orientated. He tended to sleep around or flirt with anything that had a heartbeat. I had been the one to heavily persuade him to ask a girl to the Ball, specifically Marlene McKinnon.

As much as Peter wanted to as Dorcas Meadowes, he could never gain the courage, so I had asked her for him while we were all getting ready for bed in our dorm room. She was happy to agree to go with him.

And finally there was Remus Lupin. He never really mentioned anyone, so the boys and I had devised something to get him a date. In the end he went with Mary MacDonald.

And then there was me, a day before the Ball with no date because I had focussed on my friends getting dates.

I stared down at the table as I slouched against the wall, watching my four closest friends have the time of their lives with the girls they had all chosen. There was fire whiskey in my hand that I was swirling around the glass, zoning out as I watched it, not a single expression on my face except boredom.

"Miss Sayre." I looked up from my drink with a sigh, looking to the source of the voice in front of me. "I see you don't have a date." I shook my head, sitting up and leaning my arms on the table cloth, setting my drink down as this person remained stood in front of me.

"Thanks for reminding me."

"Hostile as always." It made me smile ever so slightly, which was noticed.

"Why are you here, Regulus?" He wasn't always the nicest to me since I was friends with his brother, and I was the same to him. I was bets friends with his brother, why would I be nice to him?

"My mother always drilled into my head that a lady should never be alone, mainly at a dance." II sat up straighter, curious as to what he was saying. "Especially with the status of your name."

"Because I'm a pure-blood like you and your-" I glanced behind him to see Sirius dancing with Marlene but glancing over to me every now and then. I looked to James, who was doing the same this, and Remus, and Peter. They were sharing looks with each other. "Keep talking." I shifted my attention back to Regulus.

"What I'm saying is, I may not like you, but I have high morals when it comes to what my mother has taught me, which I would rather uphold." I tilted my head as he sighed, pulling his hands from his trouser pockets and offering me one. "Would you like to dance, Miss Sayre?" Behind him, I could see my friends momentarily freeze. I bit my lip with a smirk, standing up as I took his hand.

"You lead, I can't dance." A small smile made its way onto his lips as he chuckled.

"Of course you can't."

"Now, Master Black, don't be rude." Regulus had a genuine smile on his face when I laughed, although his brother was giving him a death glare as we passed him.

"To you? Never." Sarcasm entertained his voice, causing me to giggle.

We spent the night dancing and overall just enjoying ourselves, but by the end of the night we were sat in the courtyard just talking.
