They say that once the spirit is separated from the body then it can be reconnected to it, but that doesn't matter if the body was completely destroyed in a spaceship explosion.
As Max's soul fell gracefully down onto the headless statue of liberty, his consciousness slowly regained. He only woke up when he fell smack dab down onto liberty island. He opened his eyes, looking around and at himself. His body was translucent and his mind was spinning with thoughts. But the main thought was getting back to Sam.
He stood up, and started to float off the ground. "This is so cool! Wheee!" he did a few flips in the air. "Okay, focus. Got to find Sam. Wait, no..." he sighed and looked down. "If I'm a ghost I'll go right through him..." he started thinking how to make himself corporeal again as he started to float over the river and back to the mainland.

When he got to the mainland, he spotted a lonely looking lagomorph staring into the deep black water. But just before he was about to jump, he heard a noise. "Hey there!" The rabbit guy jumped and turned around. "Oh my.. Are you a ghost?" Max nodded. "Now I am!" He looks into the water. "Thinking of jumping in?" the guy nodded. "I'm so tired of this awful life.." max giggles. 'Well, you're in luck, for I have a way you could get to the afterlife without dying." the guy looks at him. "What do you mean?" max smiles. "Think about it. I need a corporeal body to be alive again and you want to leave this life behind. What do you say to a good old fashioned soul switching?" the guy thinks. "That's... not a bad idea actually." Max held out his hand and the guy took it. With a paralyzing "vreme" noise, their two souls were switched and the guy's spirit was now floating. Max felt his new body all over. "Man, I missed touching things!" he reached in his pocket and pulled out the soul train token, tossing it to the guy. "Have a nice afterlife!" the guy smiled. "Thank you." and vanished. Max, after getting used to walking again, started asking random people where Sam was.

After asking around, he found out that Sam was at a party, probably trying to take his mind off his recently deceased husband.
Indeed he was. Sam was at the "the monster is gone" party, which was a half celebration that the city was safe and half mourning the death of their president. Max walked in, looking around for Sam. He spotted him across the room, sipping champagne out of a glass and watching the couples dance across the floor sadly.

"SAM!!" max yelled with glee. Everyone turned their attention to him, including Sam. Max smiled widely and made his way across the dancefloor to hug him. "I missed you so much!" Sam was confused, but let him hug him for a bit before pushing him off gently. "Um, not to be rude, but I don't know you. " Max then remembered, that he technically wasn't max anymore. "O-oh right..." He stepped away but then kept staying near Sam.

He spent a few minutes following Sam around and trying to talk to him, until he got creeped out. "Just stop!" Sam said sternly. Max teared up and nodded. "O-okay.. But... Can I say one more thing..?" Sam rolled his eyes. "Fine, what is it?" Max took his hand, looking in his eyes. "You... you crack me up."

Sam was more than shocked to say the least. After a moment of stillness, he picked him up to hold him so they could be eye level, and looking into his eyes, he could see the truth. "Max...?" he whispered. Max nodded slowly. Sam teared up. "B-but.. how.... " max giggled. "Let's just say... there was soul switching involved..." Sam laughs happily and hugs him tightly. Max hugs back. "I only did it to get back to you... cause I love you..." Sam weeps. "I love you too..." he pulled back, looking into his eyes.

"My max... my wonderful little buddy..." He strokes his cheek gently. Max leans in, pressing his lips against Sam's, kissing him passionately. Sam kisses back, holding him by the waist.

They decided to leave the party and go home. On the way home, Max explained what had happened with the rabbit guy and the soul switching. Sam understood completely. "It's basically the same as my old body, just different colored fur." Sam thinks. "If you wanna look more like your old self, maybe we could bleach your fur." Max smiled widely. "Ooh yeah! I wanna bathe in bleach!" "haha, maybe!"

Once they got back to the office, Sam lay down on the couch so max could lie on top of him. They were cuddling when Sam asked "so, do you know if there will be any negative consequences to the whole 'soul switching' thing?" max shrugged. "I don't think there will be. The poor guy was probably miserable." Sam smiled. "Even so, we should probably get you looking like the little buddy everyone knows and loves," he kissed his head. "Especially me." Max giggled and yawned. "Sure Sam but, can we sleep first?" Sam nods, closing his eyes. "Can't think of a reason not to."
