"Love, max."

He finished with the dot. Once he was finished, he reread the letter and smiled. He then put it to his chest, breathing in and out. He'd taken a long, hard while to write it, but it would all be worth it if Sam accepted the offer to be his boyfriend.

Tonight was the night he was gonna tell Sam he loved him, on paper, At the school dance. Then he looks at the clock. Almost time.

~time skip~

He enters the gym, looking around for sam. But when he finally spotted him, what he saw changed everything.

Sam was holding a girl's hand and chit chatting with her.

Max felt his heart drop. He tried to walk away, but Sam spotted him. "Hey max!" he yelled. Max jumped, slowly turning around. He saw Sam waving at him. Max forced himself to smile and walked over. "Hey Sam!"

Sam smiled, putting a hand on the girl's shoulder. "Max, this is jane." The cat girl turned to him. "Hey, how's it going?" she said with a smile. Max nodded to her. "I'm doing fine!" Sam pet Jane's head. "I meant to tell you, but Jane's my girlfriend now." Max nodded, although his chest hurt. "Cool! How long have you been dating?" Sam smiled. "Just 2 days." Max playfully punched Sam's arm. "Sam you rascal! Never thought you'd get a gf!" Sam laughs. Jane takes Sam's arm. "Sammy, shall we go dance?" Sam nodded. "Of course sweetie!" he looks to max. "See ya later!" Max nodded. "See ya!" he watched as the couple held hands and walked to the dance floor. He then walked out of the gym slowly.

Then he finally started to cry as he ran home. Why was he surprised that Sam had gotten a girlfriend, he's the most attractive guy on the planet... sweetest and funniest guy too...

Way too far out of his league..

When Max arrived at home, he went around to the backyard and went to the fire pit by the patio. He gets a few sticks and tosses them in the pit. He then gets the letter out, looking over it one last time.

God, reading it now, all this would have done was make sam puke...

After crumbling up the letter with a growl-whine and tossing it into the fire pit, Max pulled the pocket lighter he always kept in his inventory out and lit the fire.

As he watched the sticks and pieces of paper burn to ash, he wept, lamenting on the fact that, now that Sam had a girlfriend, he definitely didn't have a shot with him... and probably never would.

.....

Max snapped out of his flashback when he heard Sam's voice. "Max, ya out here?" Max turned towards him. "Oh, I'm over here!" Sam walks over. "Whatcha doin out here little buddy?" Max looked back to the sky. "Just thinkin." Sam laughs. "That's rare." max giggles. "Yeah, i'm just thinking about that time in highschool when I met your ex-girlfriend jane." Sam thinks, then remembers. "Oh yeah!" he laughs. "Man, what a crazy time that was..." Max nods.

"It was a real shame that jane turned out to be a serial murderer and was after my organs, huh max?" Max giggled. "Yeah, but it was good for me since It ended up with you single again." he smiled. Sam smiled, bending down and kissing his head. "Yeah, I guess so." max giggles. Sam picks him up. "I'm kinda glad it did though... gave me a valid reason to date you." he said, kissing his cheek. Max smiled and blushed, "aww, you softie."

He takes Sam's hand in his, looking at his small gold ring next to Sam's large silver one. He smiled gently. Sam leans down, kissing him gently. Max enjoys it.

Guess he had a shot after all.
