Max was alone in the office on a Friday night, watching some action movie. Sam was out on a date with his current girlfriend which meant Max had the whole place to himself. It wasn't that much fun being alone though, as Max usually only liked watching films with Sam...
Over the past few months, Sam had been trying to find a girl to settle down with and maybe get married, but his efforts were fruitless, as every time it went like this:
Sam would meet a new girl and ask her to be his girlfriend
They would go out for a few weeks
The girl would dump him for being "weird and clingy"
Sam would be mopey for the next few days, but then they would go right back to their freelance policing life
Max sighed. What He really wanted was for Sam to ask HIM out (because they were practically married anyways so why not make it official) but Sam was either too oblivious or too focused on finding a woman to notice Max liked him.
Speaking of Sam, the door opened and he walked in, looking down. "Hey bud, how did the date with Emma go?" Max asked, even though he could tell by the dejected look on Sam's face that it didn't go well. Sam sighed, taking off his hat and coat and putting them on the coat rack next to the door. "Take a Guess, buddy..." Max got up. "I'm guessing she dumped you." Sam nodded. "Yup, said I was being too clingy and demanded space..." Max walked over, patting his arm sympathetically. "Sorry bud.." Sam looked at him sadly. "It's okay bud, it ain't your fault..." he walked over to the couch and sat down, max following. They both watched tv for a while until they got tired, then went to lie down in bed. Sam changed into his pajamas, as did Max, and they both got into their respective sides. Right as Max was about to fall asleep he heard Sam say "is... is there something wrong with me?" Max turned over to look at him. "Well, yeah, many things." Sam looked sternly at him. "Real mature max." Max laughed. "Sorry, I was jokin.'' Sam rolls his eyes. "Not funny." Max sighs. "Sorry... but seriously, maybe you should just take a break from girls." Sam looks at him. "You think so?" Max nods. "Yeah, honestly it's better to be single." Sam smiles a little. "Yeah, I guess you're right." Max smiles, patting his arm. "Don't sweat it, Sammy, I'm sure one day you'll find the right one for you." Sam smiled gently. "Thanks." he turns over. "Goodnight max..." Max smiled gently. "Goodnight sam."
When Sam fell asleep, he got out of bed and went to look at him. "Oh Sam..." he whispered, gently rubbing his head. "I hope that, One day you'll wake up and realize I'M the right one for you..." he gently kissed him on the cheek. Sam smiled in his sleep. "My sweet sam..." Max whispered gently, stroking his cheek. He then went to get back on his side of the bed, putting his arms as far around Sam as they could go, then smiling as he went to sleep.
The next day was pretty normal, they had another case or two, went to get dinner, and came back to the office to watch tv and do paperwork.
They were doing just that, max sat watching some kids cartoon and Sam filling out forms for the commissioner, when max looked over at sam. Yup, still busy. "Hey Sam? You done yet?" "Just a few more little buddy." Max sighed and kept watching. After about ten more minutes, Sam put his pen away. "Alright, all done." Max smiled, shutting off the tv. "Awesome!" He got up. "Say, there's a new record I got, and I thought you might wanna hear it!" Sam smiled, going to sit on the couch. "Sure." Max goes over to the record player and puts it on. The opening guitar and banjo notes start to play. "You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset, she's going off about something that you said, cause she'll never get your humor like i do...." the love song continues to play. Max sits next to Sam, who listens as the chorus starts. "If you could see that I'm the one who understands you, been here all along so why can't you seeeee, you belong with meeeeee, you belong with me...." Sam tilted his head, something about these lyrics seemed oddly familiar...
When the last chorus came on, Max sang along quietly.
"Standing right here, waiting out your back door, all this time, how could you not know babyyyyy, you belong with meeeeee, you belong with me! You belong with me! Have you ever thought just maybeeeeee, you belong with meeeeee, you belong with me...."
The needle went back to its stand as the song ended. "Ah, wasn't that a great song Sam?" Max said. He looked over at Sam, who appeared deep in thought. "Uh, sam..?" Sam snapped out of it, nodding. "Oh yeah, a catchy song!" He turned towards max, grinning. "Hey max, are you trying to tell me something?" Max giggled. "Whatever do you mean?" Sam took his hand. "Are you saying you want to be more than friends?" Sam said, stroking his cheek. Max blushed and giggled. "Now what on earth made you think that?" Sam laughed. "Maybe cause you just sang an entire song about it?" Max giggled again. "That was a coincidence." Sam rolls his eyes and kisses max gently. Max wraps his arms around Sam as far as they could as Sam holds him softly. After a few minutes of kissing they pull back. Sam boops Max's nose with his own. "You were right, little buddy..." Sam says. "I do belong with you."
