It was a cruel irony. The one time he did something selfless, he had to die for it.
Hadn't even been a day without max, but the world wasn't the same. It was nighttime again, and Sam found himself walking along the city streets, reliving memories and ignoring everything else. At the end of his walk, he ended up back at their office building. Looking up into the distance, he could still see the star... but then something unexpected happened.Suddenly, the star began to fall.
Sam tilted his head. Why would it fall now? It stayed in the same spot for almost 24 hours... For some reason, he felt compelled to go to the star. He sprinted off, this time in the direction of central park. As he made his way closer and closer, the star got dimmer and dimmer, as if burning out. When he got to the middle of the park, the star had completely lost all it's light, revealing what it truly was. Sam gasped, looking upon it.
He couldn't believe his eyes.
It was max, falling just like he had on top of lady liberty.
Whether it was a dream or a grief induced hallucination, Sam wasn't taking any chances this time. He leapt forward, catching him like he should have before. "Gotcha!"
As soon as he had max in his arms, he smiled, weeping gently and nuzzling his forehead. "Max..."
He kneeled down, gently holding max bridal style. He didn't know how this happened, but he didn't care, he and his little buddy were together again at last.
Suddenly, Max shifted, causing Sam to release his grip a little. "Max..?"Max slowly opened his eyes, sitting up slowly and looking around, stopping when he saw sam.
"Oh hi Sam!" he said, smiling as if nothing had ever happened.
Sam wept with joy, tackling Max in a bone crushing hug, causing him to jump. "Max... you're alive...." Max tapped his shoulder. "Might not be if you don't let go!" he wheezed out. Sam opened his eyes and let go. "Oops, sorry..." Max took a deep breath. "Geez Sam, I'm happy to see you too but you don't need to squeeze me like a python." Sam nods. He then looks max in the eyes. "H-how are you... back..?" Max smiled. "Well, long story short, I was allowed back into heaven because I 'sacrificed myself' to save the city, but I decided it was no fun if you weren't there, so I decided to dive off the edge." he giggled. "Weird huh?" Sam teared up again. "You.. gave up eternal paradise... just to be with me again?" Max nodded. "Well, DUH, Sam! I married ya for a reason!" Sam cried again. "Oh max..." he hugs him again, softer this time. "God, I love you so much..." Max hugged back. "You too Sam... you too." Sam nuzzled his head. Max mumbled something. Sam pulls back. "What was that?" Max looked away. "I didn't do it for the city you know..." he takes Sam's chin, looking him in the eyes. "I only did it to save you..." Sam gasps, crying even harder. "Max..." he kisses Max deeply and passionately. Max wraps his arms around Sam's neck while Sam wraps his arms around Max's waist. They made their heaven a place on earth.
