I saw him standing there

(art by me)

Two sounds came from max. One was the sound of his feet running away from the hoard of zombies that was in hot pursuit of him, the other was the banging of his gun as he attempted to shoot at them, which was very difficult.

He eventually manages to hide in an empty hotel, barricading the door with some chairs from the lobby. He then goes to hide in a corner, curling up into a ball.

It was day 3 since the zombies had overtaken earth, and everything had gone out the window. These zombies were fierce and hungry, eating any living or dead they came across and turning every creature into one of their own, a drooling, mindless husk.

Max looked out the window and saw the zombies had moved on, probably looking for more innocent people to eat. He sighed. Nobody was immune to the infection, every person who got caught by the zombies was ripped to shreds.

Including his partner...

Max teared up as he remembered that horrible day...

*flashback*

He and Sam were hiding from the zombies in a mall clothes store, when a hoard of all female zombies came out of nowhere and started trying to get at them. They had been cornered in one of the dressing rooms with nowhere to go, when suddenly Sam took Max's shoulders and looked into his eyes.

Max will never forget him saying "go on without me..." and then charging headfirst into the zombies, turning all their focus onto him and giving Max a chance to escape.

Leaving Sam was the last thing Max wanted to do, but Sam kept yelling at him to, and eventually he did, hoping to grant Sam's final wish.

The last thing he saw of Sam was him giving max a heartfelt smile as he ran out alone, crying at the thought of what those b**ches were gonna do to him.

Sam had sacrificed himself, all for max's sake...

Max hugged his knees and cried, he knew he was probably never gonna see Sam again... whatever was left of Sam was probably eaten or buried in the earth by now... max then realized something else.

He'd never gotten to tell Sam his true feelings...

Ever since they were kids, Max had a little crush on Sam, which turned into a gigantic crush as they got older. To him, Sam was the best thing since, well, himself. He was the only person who ever cared about him..

But he never thought he'd care for him like... that...

He always assumed Sam thought of him more like a little brother. That made sense, right? Sam would always be there for max, even when everyone else hated him. He'd play with max, help him with homework, and always make time to noogie him. That's what brothers do, right? And if Sam thought of him like that, there really wasn't a point in trying to pursue him romantically. It would just weird Sam out, and make him think he was crazy(well, more crazy than he actually was).

So Max always tried to keep his feelings to himself, and bury them so they'd never have any chance of escaping.

But now that Sam was... gone... he wished he'd at least told him... even if Sam was weirded out and thought he was crazy, he'd feel a little better that Sam at least knew how he felt.

Hell, maybe if Sam left him... and he had time to get over the pain...

Then losing him... permanently... wouldn't hurt as much...

Max cried harder. "God... why was I always pretending to be tough, and not care about anything..." he kept weeping.

Suddenly, he heard the elevator ding. Max jumps, but slowly looks to the direction and watches it open, a figure stepping out.
