Sam and max stories

A piece of the past

"Mail's here!" Sam said as he walked back into the office. Max smiled at him from his desk. "Ooh boy! I hope the newest edition of hotbunny came out! I'm definitely gonna be on the cover of this one!" Sam laughs and shakes his head. "Not today, I'm afraid." Max frowns and looks away. "Darn." Sam smiles. "You did get something though." max ears perk up as Sam sets a small box on his desk. "Oooh!" Max says. Starting to open it. "It's from someplace called 'eastbunny hop'.'' Max looks at him. "Hey, that's the place where I grew up!" Sam smiles. "Really" Max nods as he opens the box. The envelope falls off the top. "Oh! You got a letter too." Sam says, picking it up. Max looks at him. "Will you read it to me?" Sam nods and opens it. "Of course."

"Dear max,

I know we haven't talked for a while, but today while Louise and I were cleaning out the closet under the stairs, she found this! I figured you might want it back. Hope you are doing well in New York and I hope you come back to visit soon!

Love, Ruby"

Max gasps and smiles, trying to open the box. Sam, meanwhile, rereads the letter. Who is ruby? He's never known a ruby... max had certainly never mentioned anyone named ruby...

Finally getting the box open, His eyes go wide when he sees what's inside. "Oh my god..." Max says, taking it out.

It is a red elephant toy made out of rubber.

So many memories come flooding back.

Max smiles and tears up. "Elephant..." he says, hugging the thing tightly. "I thought I'd lost this thing years ago!" Sam smiles. "Aww, isn't that sweet..." Max weeps happily and keeps hugging the thing. "I've missed this thing..." He then stands up, going to sit on the couch with it.. Sam looks in the box and sees a photograph, picking it up.

It is a photograph of Max when he was younger, wearing a red striped shirt and overalls, holding his red rubber elephant. Standing behind him was a taller bunny girl wearing a yellow dress with green and orange spots and purple sleeves. On the photo was written, "max and ruby." Sam smiles. 'That must be ruby...' he thinks.

Max hugs the toy again. "Man, I gotta call ruby and thank her for finding it..." Sam nods. "Yeah, you should. But Max, I have a question." he says, sitting next to him on the couch. "Who's ruby?" Sam says. Max smiles. "Oh, she's my older sister." Max says. Sam nods. "Ah, you've never mentioned her before.." Max shrugs. "Well, I haven't seen her in forever." Sam sits on the couch. "Tell me more about her." Max nods.

"Well, I basically lived with her until I was old enough to go to highschool, then I moved up here." he rubs the back of his neck. "We... didn't get along the best when we were kids... i was always getting into trouble, she was always yelling at me, that sorta stuff." he smiles a little. "But it got better as time went on. We got along a lot better when we got older..." he giggles. "I was even the best man at her wedding!" Sam smiles. "Wow, what a story." Max nods and sets the elephant down. "Now, there's something I gotta do."

He gets up and walks to the phone, dialing a number. He then holds it to his ear. Sam picks up the elephant and holds it in his lap, keeping it safe for Max until he gets back.

"Hello? Hey ruby! It's me!" Max answered. Sam listened to Max's side of the conversation.

"Yeah I got your package, and I wanted to thank you so much for sending me the elephant... Yes of course! Yeah, how are you and Louise doing?.... That's good!.... Yeah, Sam and I are doing fine.... Oh, he's my boyfriend." his expression falters. "....Uh, about 3 years." he winces as Sam vaguely hears a muffled woman's voice yelling, giggling to himself "....Well I was gonna tell you but I got busy!" max answers. ".....Police business! ....No I- ugh..." max facepalms and waits for ruby to stop yelling. "...listen sis, I have to go... yeah yeah, I'll be sure to come see you guys soon.... Okay.... Yeah... yeah.... Alright, love ya too sis, bye!" He hangs up the phone, looking to sam. "And people wonder why I grew up being a rebel."

Sam laughs. "Ah, big sisters."
