Two halves of a broken heart

Things were just great. Sam and Max had finally been reunited across timelines when Max showed up in that time travelling elevator, and the two best friends had gone back to the office and basically slept for like 3 days straight, having not been able to for the past week. Well, Sam did anyway. Max just spent the days mostly staring at Sam while he slept, and that's exactly what he was doing tonight.

God, he'd missed staring at him.

Sam had fallen asleep in Max's lap and Max had been stroking his head. Stroking his head and thinking. Thinking about how he loved Sam, and would never let him go, even though Sam didn't love him back...

He couldn't help it. He loved Sam more than anything, even though he knew they would always just be friends...

In Max's timeline, he had developed feelings for Sam over the years and eventually confessed to him, but got turned down, Sam saying he was straight. But he'd reassured Max that he cared about him a lot and that their friendship was more special to him than anything. Max accepted that, even though he was deeply heartbroken on the inside. But he managed to put up the façade that he'd gotten over his childish crush.

But he knew he'd never really be over it.

Max figured that the same thing happened in this timeline, and decided to keep his feelings to himself. He didn't want to mess things up with this Sam too..

But the universe has a crazy way of flipping things around.

Max had gotten hungry and gently lifted Sam's head up and placed it down on the couch. "Be right back," he whispered. He smiled and gave Sam a little kiss on the head. "Love ya." he then got up and went to go eat some glazed McGuffins.

Once he got back with the box, he saw Sam sitting up, yawning and stretching. "Hey, look who's finally awake!" He smiled, sitting back down. "Morning max." Sam said, smiling. "Did you have a nice nap?" Max said as he ate one. Sam nods. "Yeah, best sleep I've had in weeks." Max offered Sam a McGuffin, which he took and ate. "Thanks." Max smiled, eating another one. "No problem." They spent the next few minutes relaxing and eating McGuffins. Once they were full max set the box to the side.

"You know, I had a crazy dream while I was napping." Sam said. Max looked at him. "Yeah?" Sam laughed a little, then said quietly "You told me you loved me." Max blushed. Had Sam heard him? "W-wow, crazy!" Sam nodded. "Yeah, I have crazy dreams." he looked off to the side, then said quietly, "I know you'd never see me like that..."

Unfortunately for Sam, Max's long ears weren't just for show. His head was buzzing with questions. "H-how would you know that?" Sam gave Max a sad look. "You told me so, remember?" Max shakes his head. Sam sighed. "Technically I guess it was this timeline's max." he looked away. "I-it was a few months ago... I told you that I loved you, but you rejected me..." Max gasped, smiling a little. "Oh my gosh..." Sam nods. "Yeah... so... I know you don't see me like that..." max takes Sam's hand. "Look at me?" Sam does, slowly. Max's smile was wide. "Sam, in my timeline, it was you who rejected ME!" Sam's eyes went wide. "W-wait are you serious?" Max nods. "Yes!' a small smile began to make its way across Sam's face. "D-does that mean... what I think it means?" max nods faster. "Yes Sam!" he jumps on Sam, hugging and kissing him happily. Sam returns the favor, holding him so tightly he almost crushes him. Max pulls back. "S-Sam!" Sam lets him go. "O-oops. Sorry.." Max giggles. "It's okay." he kisses him again, softer this time. "I love you Sam!" Sam nuzzles his head. "I love you too max..."

Max giggled. "Wow, who knew all it took for us to fall in love was a dimensional shift?" Sam laughs. "You crack me up little buddy." max smiles and blushes. "So should we get married now?" he says, looking into Sam's eyes. Sam nods. "As soon as we can, doll." the two spent the rest of the night embracing and saying how much they loved each other.
