That time of year had rolled around again, valentines day. And Sam and Max were once again chasing after the teenaged self proclaimed matchmaker known as lovergirl.
"Chase me all you want, freelance police, you cannot fight the power of love!" she said, shooting at max with her love guns, which he dodged. "Listen girlie, I'm not into girls who wear an abundance of pink." Sam looked at him. "You're not into girls at all max." lovergirl giggled deviously. "You will be! You will be my little bunny!" Max growled. "I am not a BUNNY god damn it!"
Lots more insults and witty banter were exchanged as the freelance police tried to apprehend lovergirl. Eventually, Max was able to keep her distracted long enough for Sam to sneak up behind her and handcuff her, but not before she got one good shot which hit max right in the forehead, knocking him on his back end. Sam gasped, going to help him up. "You okay little buddy?" Max got up, rubbing his forehead.
But as soon as Max opens his eyes and looks up at Sam, his eyes shine and his face goes pink. "Hehe, hi sam~" Sam's stomach falls. "Oh no..." Max takes hold of his tie. "May I just say, you smell really good today, is that new cologne?" Sam pushes his head away, blushing. "Q-quit foolin 'around max, we've still got work to do!" max humphs. "Fine."
Throughout wrangling lovergirl back to the car, the drive to the jailhouse, tossing her in, and the drive back to the office, Max would not stop flirting with him. Holding and nuzzling his arm, telling him how pretty he was and how he smelled good, complimenting his fluffiness and gun skills, etc etc. Sam would be lying if he said he didn't enjoy it, but he kept telling himself not to listen because Max was under the influence of magic.
"I sure hope this spell wears off soon.." Sam mumbled as he walked back into the office, plopping down in his chair and starting to fill out paperwork for the latest case. Max of course stood across the desk and kept staring at him. Sam tried to work but couldn't concentrate with Max's beady brown eyes glued to him. "Okay max can you please stop staring? It's distracting." "what? Am I not allowed to admire my devilishly handsome partner?" Sam sighed. "No you are not. Now go away." Max giggles, climbing on his lap. "You're so silly." Sam blushes. "Max please..." Max boops his nose. "Why?" he leans closer. "Do you find my warmth... alarming, sam?" Sam says nothing, sweating and trying to push him off again, to no avail as Max had a death grip on his tie...
"I might leave you alone if you kiss me."
Sam went red, shaking his head. "No, absolutely not." Max giggled. "Why not? Are ya scared, sammy?" Sam looks away. "No.. it's just..." he sighs and looks him in the eye. "Max... I don't want to take advantage of you... I mean look at you..." he gestures to max. "You're clearly still under the love spell hater-girl put on you..." Max smiled gently. "Sammy..." he nose nuzzles him. "I want this okay? It'll be fine..." Sam looks into his eyes. "Max... are you... 100% sure you'd be okay with it?"
Max nods. "Yeah! It's just a little kiss, it won't hurt anything." Sam nods. "And, you promise to stop bugging me?" Max nods. "Cross my heart."
Sam thinks a little more , then nods. "Just one, okay?" Max nods. "Only one. Unless you want more~" he winks. Sam blushes and sighs gently. "Close your eyes." Max does, leaning closer. Sam takes his chin, kissing him very lightly on the lips. Max takes hold of his collar, pulling him closer, making Sam whimper.sam shifts his hands, holding Max gently by the shoulders. The kiss was soft and slow, it felt just perfect.
Of course, it was at this exact moment the love spell wore off, max turning red and pulling back abruptly. "SAM WHAT THE HELL??" Sam's eyes shot open. "M-max i thought you wanted-" he then noticed max's eyes were no longer shining with the pink tint they had. "O-oh... right..." he gently lifts Max off and sets him down, getting up from his chair.
Sam then went to lock himself in the bathroom, whimpering and crying. "God dammit... I knew this would happen... now he hates me and it's all my fault... why did I agree to that kiss..." he keeps whining like a puppy until he hears knocking. "Sam, come out of there you big goof!" Sam shakily sighs, taking a breath. He opened the door, and there was an irritated looking max, arms crossed and tapping his foot.
"You've got some explaining to do, mister."
Sam sat Max down on the couch, explaining how Max had gotten hit by a love bullet and was under its spell for the past hour, and how it was making him act like a newlywed bride. Max nods, listening.
Sam looks in his eyes. "You said you would leave me alone if I kissed you and..." he sighs."i-i know I... I shouldn't have... but.... the way you looked at me, and spoke so sweetly, and kept telling me it was going to be okay... i just..." he tears up again. "I-im so sorry..." Max nods. "I see."
"Well Sam, I have one more question for you." Max says, moving closer. Sam looks at him. "Yeah?" Max looks him in the eye. "And I want you to answer honestly, okay?" Sam nods. "Okay."
"How do you really feel about me?"
Sam freezes, then thinks. Should he lie and try to salvage what's left of their friendship? Or should he just tell the truth and risk angering him again? Max looks at him, serious. "You don't have to think about it, Sam, just tell me."
Sam sighs. Guess it's all or nothing.
"Honestly, I really do love you max..." Sam finally answered, his eyes shut tight.
"That's all you had to say."
Sam opens his eyes to see Max smiling at him. Max scoots over to hug him. "Y'know, when you were tossing the love bug in prison, I had the opportunity to study those so called "love bullets" of hers. Turns out they aren't magic at all." Sam holds Max, tilting his head. "What do you mean?" Max looks up at him. "They contain a mixture of chemicals that make the target drop their inhibitions and increase their desire to love." he giggles. "It also makes their eyes go pink." Sam smiles a little. "Huh, neat." Max nods. "Yeah! But, as I demonstrated, the chemicals only last for a little while." Sam sweats a bit. "Yeah..."
Max nuzzles up to him. Sam hugs max a little tighter. "So, uh, what does this mean for us now?" Max looks up at him. "What do you mean?" Sam looks at him. "Well... now that you know about my feelings for you... are you gonna... leave?" max gasps. "What? No! Of course not!" Sam sighs, a metaphorical weight being lifted. "Good." Max tilts his head. "Why would I leave?"
Sam's gaze softens. "Because, I love you, and that weirds you out, right?" max giggles. "Who said I was weirded out?" Sam's eyes go wide. "Wait... i- i thought you were mad cause i kissed you..?" Max smiled. "I mean, sure, I was a little startled, but I never said I didn't like it." Sam smiled a little. "Well, you could have said that...'' Max presses his nose to Sam's. "Like I said, you're a big goof."
The two kiss softly again, no more words needed. Just love.
