Rays of golden evening sunset shone through teenage Sam's bedroom window as he was reading one of his detective novels. It was Friday night and he was enjoying his free time. Suddenly, he heard his name being called. "Sam, could you come down here please?" Sam puts the bookmark back in and goes down to see what his mom wanted.
He walked into the living room to see his mom dressed up nicely and holding his baby sister, lily. "Mom?" she turned to him. "Oh Sam! Sorry to spring this on you, but could you watch lily tonight?" She hands the pup to him. "Your father and I have a dinner party to go to and I forgot to get a sitter..." Sam holds lily. "Sure, I wasn't doing anything tonight." his mom smiles. "Thank you honey, you're a lifesaver!" She walked towards the door. "Dad and I should be home by ten," she giggled. "Don't get in too much trouble!" Sam laughs. "We'll try our best mom."
Sam waved to his mom as she went out the door. He then looks to lily. "Well sis, looks like you'll be hanging out with me tonight!" Lily claps and smiles happily. Suddenly, the phone rings. "Oh!" Sam sets down and holds Lily on his lap with one hand while answering the phone with the other. "Parker house." "Hey Sam, how's it shakin?" said a familiar high voice. "Hey, max. What's up?" Sam smiled. "It's Friday night! Wanna play fizzball?" Sam's shoulders droop. "Ah, i can't, my parents just went out and left me to watch lily." max groans. "Dammit! I was looking forward to hanging out with you!" Sam sighs. "Sorry Max, I can't leave Lily by herself.." "can't you just duct tape her to the wall or something?" Sam laughs. "No, that's not an effective babysitting tactic." Max is silent for a moment. "I know! If you can't come to me, I'll come to you! Be over soon!" Sam's eyes go wide. "No, max, you don't have to-'' he heard the phone click and then the hang up dial tone. He sighed, putting the phone down and looking to lily. "Whelp, looks like we're in for a rough night." lily reaches up and pats his muzzle. "Sat!" Sam smiles. "Thanks sis."
A few moments later, the doorbell rang. Sam set Lily down on the couch. "Stay here okay?" lily nodded. Sam went to open the door, finding max there. "Heyyyy!" he said. Sam smiled. "Hey buddy, come on in." Max came in, going over to the sofa and spotting lily. "Hey lil! How's the girl?" Lily giggled. "Mak!" she said, holding her arms up. Max picks her up, sitting down. Sam sits next to him. "Be careful with her max!" Max looks at him. "Relax Sam, I know how to handle babies." Sam raises an eyebrow. "Really?" Max nods. "Yeah, remember my two little cousins?" Sam thinks, then remembers. "Ah yes, those little tykes." Max smiles. "Yeah, I spent a whole weekend with them once." he giggles. "It was awful." Sam laughs. "I can imagine."
Max pet lily's head gently. "So no worries, I know a lot about kids." lily giggles and pat's max's chest gently. Sam smiles. "You planning on having any when you get older?" Max thinks. "Ehhh, I haven't decided yet." he lets lily gnaw on his finger. "On one hand, I don't think it would be much fun having to worry about feeding and changing them 24/7..." Sam nods. "I see." max grins. "But on the other hand, it would be really cool to play with them and watch them grow up, not to mention teaching them how to use weapons." Sam nods. "Yeah, sounds awesome." max giggles. "Yeah." he looks to sam. "Do you think I'd make a good dad?" Sam thinks. "Maybe. You never really know unless you try." Max nods. "Yeah."
Sam looks at the clock. It was 8:30. He thinks. "Hey, how about you go make us some popcorn and I'll pick out a movie?" He gently takes Lily and puts her on his lap. "Aww Sam, why can't I pick the movie?" Sam giggles. "Lily is only one and a half. She's a little too young to watch 'machine gun dismemberment corpse factory 3.'" max huffs. "But it's an underrated classic!" Sam gets up. "Go make popcorn." Max rolls his eyes. "Fine..."
Sam chose a kids film and put it in the vcr while Max made some microwave popcorn, surprisingly not burning down the kitchen in the process. He came back and put the bowl between them on the couch. Lily immediately reached for some, eating a whole handful. Sam laughed. "Now Lily, you gotta share!" Max laughed. "It's her night Sam, let her eat what she wants!" Sam laughs and rolls his eyes. The three had a fun time eating the popcorn and watching the movie.
Eventually, Lily fell asleep on Max's lap. He smiled. "Sam, look!" Sam looked. "Aww..." Max rubs Lily's hair gently. "She's a sweetheart isn't she?" Max says. Sam nods. "Yeah." he puts a hand on Max's shoulder. "You know max, you're a lot better with kids than one would think.." Max giggles a little. "I told you." Sam smiled. "I think you're gonna be a great dad one day." Max looks at him. "You really think so?" Sam nodded. "Yeah... and hey, if you have kids, maybe I could be their 'uncle Sam', eh?" He did finger guns. Max looked annoyed. "Lame." Sam huffed. "Everyone's a critic." Max leaned his head on Sam's shoulder, slowly nodding off.
Little did Sam know he wouldn't be the uncle to Max's future kids, but their other dad.
