Angelo
The day flew by after Arnell, Reggie, Toya, and Omar got here. I was finishing up the last of the cookies and other desserts when Sami said something that made us all freeze. "Dad, can I have a cookie?" Sami asked absentmindedly. I froze as I looked up at Maja. Her eyes went wide with surprise, same with her sisters.
"He's not your dad," Dem said without looking from the cookie he was decorating. Sami's head rose at his word as realization washed over her face. Before Maja or I could say anything to Sami took off out of the kitchen. "Woah, what happened?" Rod asked as the rest of the guys joined us in the kitchen.
I looked at Maja seeing her wipe her hands over her face. "What's going on?" J.J. asked. "Did I do something wrong?" Dem asked. Maja walked over to him. "No, baby but we need to talk, okay. Can you go wait for me in the den?" She asked him. He nodded his head. "What happened with Sami?" Dimitri asked. Maja turned to him sighing heavily. "Sami called Angelo dad." She said quietly.
I cleared my throat as we all looked at Dimitri. I wouldn't be surprised if he was pissed. Sami is his only daughter and of course, I wanted her to see me as a parental figure but I never want to overstep. Dimitri looked from me to Maja. I watched as the two of them held a silent conversation before he huffed walking off in the direction Sami went.
"How about I take him and you two go talk to Dem?" Omar said taking Teddy from her. "Can one of you go check on Nicky, please?" Maja asked. "I'll go," Rod said. She nodded her head before turning to me. She held her hand out for me to take. I grabbed it as she led me down the hall and into the den. We walked in to see Dem sitting on the couch. "Are you mad at me?" He asked as we rounded the couch. "No," I said. "I'm sorry." He quickly said as rushed over hugging Maja.
She sat down on the couch pulling Dem onto her lap hugging him. I sat on the coffee table looking at the two of them. "Take a deep breath," I said as he looked at me. He took a quick breath making me chuckle. "Again, but slower," I said. He tried again but slowed down this time. "I didn't mean to make Sami cry, I just—I thought that uncle D was her dad not dad." He said pointing at me.
"Uncle D is her dad," Maja said. "Then why did she call my dad her dad?" He asked. Maja and I both had a stepparent. We both knew the awkwardness of a stranger being brought into our already existing families. Although our experience with stepparents was very different. Mj sighed scratching her head trying to figure out how to word this properly for a child.
"I'm not Sami's biological dad," I said. Dem turned and looked at me. "Do you know what biological means?" I asked him. He shook his head no. "It basically means blood. I'm not related to Sami by blood." I explained. "But you're not related to me by blood either." He said. I moved to sit next to him and Mj. "No I'm not, but your still my son, and you still see me as your dad, right?" I asked him.
He nodded his head. "It's kind of the same with Sami, I think. Even though I may not be related to either of you by blood I still want you both to know I love you. You remember how nervous you were when you first called me dad?" I asked him. He nodded his head. "I was scared I'd make my other dad upset." He whispered. I gently rubbed his head.
