When The Winter Soldier and The Summer Soldier resurfaced, it was 2014. The Avengers, the worlds mightiest hero's, were their task. Kill them. All of them. First, take out the one person who could potentially snap them out of their mind control, Steve Rogers. And then, the order didn't matter, as long as they were dead.
So The Winter Soldier, and The Summer Soldier, went to take out Steve Rogers. He was alone, in a car, and they attacked. Jumped at the opportunity. The fought, and fought. You would think that there being two of the assassins with no emotions, against one man, even if he was a super soldier, so we're they, it wouldn't be as hard, but it was.
Both of them had face coverings on. To hide their identities from anyone and everyone. They kept fighting, until The Winter Soldiers mask was knocked off. And Steve recognized him. "Bucky?" He asked, stopping in his tracks. "Who the hell is Bucky?" Bucky asks. Him and Aspen not recognizing Steve or themselves from the memory wipe and mind control.
The Winter Soldier keeps fighting. And so did The Summer Soldier. Until she was knocked out. And her face covering came off too. And Steve recognized her immediately. But she was unconscious. "Oh my god. Aspen..." he whispered to himself. He was caught in a moment of vulnerability and The Winter Soldier took advantage.
He hit him over the head. They had been on a bridge. Steve's upper body was now hanging over with The winter Soldier holding him firmly. Striking him in the face over and over again with his vibranium arm. Steve was nearly unconscious, but he gave it a shot.
Bucky had his arm drawn back as he was about to hit Steve again, this time would knock him out for sure, but as he looked in Steve's eyes, he paused for a moment. "I'm with you, til the end of the line." Steve said. Bucky stopped. Recognization showed on his face as he dropped his metal arm but still held Steve firmly.
After a few seconds, he let him go all together. And by then, the rest of the avengers were there. They took in Bucky and Aspen. Putting them both in restraints. Strong enough to hold them. Bucky started realizing who he was and what was going on, especially after Steve said down with him and talked to him.
"Which Bucky am I talking to?" He asks him. "Your moms name was Sarah." Bucky replies. Steve gives him a slight smile. Over the course of a few weeks, closing in on a month, they worked Bucky out of his mind control and helped him remember everything until he was practically back to who he was.
But Aspen wouldn't break. They kept Aspen and Bucky separate just incase anything we're to happen but that didn't seem like it was working. Bucky had free reign around the compound. They figured out his trigger words and they figured out how to get rid of them, but he refused to do anything until they got Aspen back.
Bucky say in-front of Aspen. Her face was straight. She said nothing. She looked at him like he meant nothing. "Aspen." Bucky whispered. She was restrained but he could still touch her. He held her hand as best he could and rubbed her knuckles with his thumb. "Aspen I'm here." He whispered. He saw a flicker of light in her eyes. She stared intently into his steel blue eyes now.
"Aspen I'm right here with you." Bucky whispered. And just like that, Aspen snapped out of it. The skin in skin contact with Bucky from him holding her hand, him saying her name, and repeating words to her that she had to him a million times, brought her back.
But before anything else could happen or be said they were pulled apart again. Bucky was locked in a room that was right next to the room they were holding Aspen in. Steve worked with her for weeks like he did Bucky, helped her remember, figured out her trigger words.
And one night Bucky was in his room, and he woke up sweating, nearly in tears, from a nightmare, more like a flashback. Of him killing. He woke up distressed. "Where's Aspen? I need Aspen." He called out. She had heard him through the walls and yelled back to him. "Bucky I'm here." She called out to him.
She was still hazy on how they got to where they were, how she was brought out of her mind control, how he was brought out of his. "I-how did I..." she started trying to ask her question but couldn't quite find the right words to use. But Bucky knew what she was trying to ask. "Steve snapped me out of it..." Bucky said. "Then I got you out of it." He said slowly. Like he was trying to figure out how it made her feel that it was him who brought her back to who she was.
And soon, they were both well enough, physically and mentally out of Hydras control, that they were ready to get rid of their trigger words. They had to go to a place called Wakanda, they would be put in cryostasis, and after they figured out how to, they'd bring them back out and after several more healing steps, they would be free.
They were in the procedure room, about to go under. Steve came to say goodbye to them. Bucky and Aspen sat next to each other on an exam table. Bucky looked at Aspen and gave a warm smile. "I'll see you when we wake up doll." He told her. Doll. A name he only used for her.
Aspen looked up at Steve who was looking distraught, rightfully so, and she gave him a weak smile. "Stevie don't look so glum. We'll wake up soon. As soon as they figure out how to get Hydra out of our minds." Aspen tells him. Trying to lighten the mood.
Steve still wasn't convinced so Bucky gave it a try. "For what it's worth pal, we'll look out for each other." Bucky says. Steve nods his head. He goes over to talk to Ta'Challa but little did Aspen and Bucky know, he was still listening to what they were saying.
Aspen looked at Bucky. "Bucky I'm scared." She said. "We don't know how long we'll be gone for..." Aspen says. Her only worry with doing this was that they may be gone too long and by the time they would get back, Steve wouldn't be here still. If it were just them, if Steve wasn't there, if he wasn't her brother, if he hadn't have been frozen too, if he had died, she wouldn't care what happened to her because her and Bucky were doing this together.
"I'm right here Aspen. Everything will be okay." Bucky tells her. "What if I think about it when I'm under?" She asks. Referring to the killing, Hydra, the things they had to do. "Think about something else instead. Something that makes you happy." He tells her. "I'll think about you." Aspen tells him. He smiles at her and shakes his head slightly. "I'll think about you." He says. And in that moment, Steve knew, his best friend and his sister would fall for each other...
