Thatch POV
I saw the text, then read it again. Then one more time for good measure.
(Y/n): Hey, I just wanted to tell you thank you. I really appreciated all the time you put up with me, and I hope you had a good Thanksgiving! I also wanted to let you know that you probably won't see me in class anymore. I lost the house so I'll be going away to find some place cheaper, but don't miss me too much lol but I'll miss you.
Something didn't feel right. The words didn't sound like the girl who told her story through tears in my arms yesterday. It felt wrong and the words "I'll be going away" sounded odd. Like I would never see her again. I tried to call her, but I only got her voicemail.
Once, twice, then a third time. All voicemail.
It didn't make sense, she had just sent the text. She should have still had her phone near her.
Something is very wrong.
I called Sabo immediately after. It was close to midnight so I expected it to ring a few times but he picked up after the first two rings.
"Thatch? What's up?" he answered tiredly.
"Hey, this is an odd question, but could you send me (Y/n)'s address?" I asked, tapping my foot.
I heard him hum, confused. "Sure, is everything okay?"
"It will be, I'm just making sure," I said, trying not to let my anxiety show. "She texted something that has me worried so I just wanna check that she's okay."
"Do you need backup? Do I need to come too?" he asked, now significantly more awake.
I sighed, and shook my head. "No, but I will keep you updated. Now send me the damn address."
"Yessir, but you better call me later!" he demanded as he hung up.
I rolled my eyes but brightened as the text came through. I texted him a quick thank you before putting it in my maps app and jumping into my car. I felt the rumble of the engine turn on and sped to her house, following the directions as fast as I could. I saw Mihawk's black motorcycle behind me and nodded, guessing she sent him a similar text.
The tires squealed slightly as we pulled into her driveway and I heard a loud clang in the backyard. I jumped out of the car and ran through the gate, Mihawk hot on my tail. We started searching the backyard for any trace of her. I was scrambling to look around when Mihawk let out a relieved breath.
I whipped around and looked up to where his gaze was pointed.
She was sitting on the top of the roof, swaddled in oversized clothing and her hair loose and sticking to her tear-stained face. She looked almost ethereal.
I snapped out of it as Mihawk called out to her. "(Y/n), stay there, I'm coming up."
He scanned around for a way up as she shook her head and cried harder.
"No! Don't, just- just leave me alone, damnit!" she sobbed. Her voice catching and gasping broke my heart. "No one was supposed to see me like this! I was supposed to say my quiet goodbye and then disappear! Why can't I just be at peace? Why can't I just be with my brother?"
Mihawk found a tree that branched close to the roof and ran up, collecting her in his arms and jumping down. I ran up to them and checked her for any injuries. She didn't seem to have any, making me relax as she leaned into our arms.
"Why? Why did you two come here?" she asked between gasped breaths.
"Because you called," we answered, simply stating the truth.
