Penguin POV
I groaned as I lost count again. Shachi snickered as he took another bundle of bills from my bag and started counting it. I started again and tried to focus.
"You know you could just let me do it, you've clearly have other shit on your mind," Shachi teased, making me lose count again.
I groaned and threw the wad at him. "Fuck you, you knew I was almost done that time!" I hollered, pissed for a second before I started laughing. "You're an ass."
"I know, and it's a nice one," he snarked with a wink. "Go deal with whatever's getting your panties in a twist, dumbass."
I gave him a smile and slipped out of the van, turning on my phone. I had it off almost all day and I hoped I hadn't missed anything from (Y/n). The device slowly turned on, making me tap my foot impatiently. When my lock screen finally loaded I had a few notifications but the two that stood out to me were a missed call from her at 10 AM and a text from an hour ago.
The call didn't have a voicemail, but the text made me freeze for a moment.
Wifey: Hey Peng! Just wanted to tell you I love you and that I hope whatever bs errand Law put you on is going well! Hope it didn't fuck up your Thanksgiving too bad lol Anyway, it looks like I have to move so you probably won't see me when you get back, but I want you to know that you helped me get through a lot and I really do love you, Peng. Don't chase after me, okay? It's not your fault.
I almost dropped my phone.
What? No. This isn't happening. She's gonna text me in a minute and tell me it's a joke right? Why would she move? She- That fucking landlord?! I'll kill him. She doesn't need to go anywhere. She could move in with me? Yeah, she already knows where I live, and we can just go places together and I can tell Law I need some time off and-
I need to talk to her.
I spun on my heel and hopped back into the van. "Hey Shachi, you almost done? I need to go check something back in town," I said vaguely as I got the driver's seat situated.
"Yeah? I have like one more to count, but I wanted to talk to you about something I found on (Y/n)," he said.
I turned to look at him and tilted my head. "What about her?"
"She- bro she works for Shanks," he blurted.
I stared at him for a moment. "Her brother worked for Shanks, she hasn't spoken to him since he passed away. I doubt that she works for a man she hates," I explained. I looked at him for a moment longer. "Was that it?"
He stared at me like I grew another head. "Dude, we're an enemy gang. She could be getting close to kill our asses! Are you dense?" he hissed, gritting his teeth.
"Shachi," I said lowly. He froze. "(Y/n) is a person. She's been through enough to last her two lifetimes, just like us. She has had chance after chance to slit my throat and she hasn't. Hell, if she did I'd be fine with it," I confessed.
He just stared at me, jaw dropped.
"So, if you're done with your little rant and done counting, I'm gonna drop you at your house and go check on her. 'Kay?" I finished with a calm smile and sat in the driver's seat.
I took his silence for an affirmative and turned the key, starting off on the road home.
----------
When I got to her house it was quiet. I saw a few new tire marks on her driveway but shook it off. She might have had a friend or two over, nothing to worry about. I walked up to her door and it was locked. I smiled, feeling more secure about her being okay. However one part of her text was rubbing me the wrong way.
