"....where did you even find a guppy, Reaper?"
Dream asked hesitantly once his thoughts settled once he realised exactly what Reaper was holding. He did his best to examine what looked like a young Mer who was aggressively chewing some unidentified meat while Reaper looked like they were holding a rather fragile shell that would shatter any second.
He was pretty sure young Mer's ate much smaller food like seaweed, small fish or even mussels, rarely seeing even grown Mer's eat seal meat with such gusto or such a feral intensity, having so many questions especially wondering where the parents of the young one were.
The silent question he asked Reaper ended up with a shake of their head, wincing at what he had frankly expected as otherwises an angry Mer would be trying to maul Reaper despite the strength difference, Mer rather protective of their young Nightmare learned that the hard way and nearly lost an eye when a dolphin Mer got in a lucky shot.
He might have mistaken the little one for another Leviathan if he wasn't aware that was near impossible and they were far too small for that, unsure what exactly Reaper had found due to the terrible state of the Mer's fins but eventually landed on them being a Betta Mer which made this even stranger as they tended to live further south of here...and were rather rare due to land dwellers liking to poach them.
Spotting some vibrant gold patches on the tail made him feel a bit sad, such a rare beautiful colour like his own and yet it was washed out by the dark greys and the missing scales truly gave the small one a dull appearance.
That had not what he had been expecting when he sensed Reaper come into his territory, unable to help his magic instinctively sparked defensively despite how they were all trying to reduce the number of fights that occured between their kind especially when the last large fight accidentally sunk an island when Error got annoyed with Ink.
It was very much a work in progress but the fact he had not automatically body slammed Reaper out of his territory was progress, the distraction at seeing an absolutely tiny Mer in their hands was a good distraction as well.
"He was just swimming all on his own! I found him in my territory Dream. Look at his tail! Look how hungry he is. Look at his scales!"
Dream winced at the quickly growing panic in Reapers voice that they were hiding badly but could understand why they were alarmed as Reaper territory was...well, pretty much a dead wasteland that stank of death most of the time. Usually only the sick or dying Mer ended up stumbling on that area as everyone's else's instincts would warn them away, not to mention the scent their kind gave off usually made most bolt in alarm as well.
It was a bit of a lonely life but over the centuries things had started to change for the better and now were trying to visit each other and temper back their powers, last hearing that his twin had managed to find a pod of shark Mer they had grown attached to.
He wasnt jealous, of course he wasnt but he felt he loneliness was a bit heavy some days, especially with sensing the fear he invoked when near other Mer or the pure fear when the land dwellers spotted him.
He was brought out of his thoughts when a small tail smacked againt his face, looking down at the source which was a very grumpy Betta Mer, realising they were barely bigger than a hatchling and internally wincing at the distressing state of their tail.
