The tension on the island was palpable. Roger's crew stepped cautiously onto the sandy shore, your captain leading the way with his usual swagger. Whitebeard's crew was already scattered across the area, their imposing presence a constant reminder of the delicate balance between rivalry and respect.
You stayed close to Rayleigh, your hand brushing the hilt of your sword as your eyes swept over the scene. You weren't looking for threats, though, not this time. You were looking for him. You hoped he was still alive.
When you spotted Izou, standing near the edge of the clearing with his pistols hanging at his sides, your breath caught in your throat. He looked almost exactly as you remembered, poised, elegant, with an unshakable calm that had always set him apart, but when his gaze drifted in your direction, you quickly turned away, your heart pounding.
"Don't even think about it" Rayleigh murmured, his voice low enough that only you could hear. You stiffened, glancing at him out of the corner of your eye. "Think about what?". Rayleigh's lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. "You're not as subtle as you think. Just remember where your loyalties lie".
His words sent a pang of guilt through you, but you forced yourself to nod. "I know". Rayleigh didn't press further, but his warning lingered, the weight of it pressing down on you as the captains began their negotiations.
As the evening fell and the crews settled into their respective camps, you found yourself restless. The discussions between Roger and Whitebeard were still ongoing, their booming voices echoing across the clearing. No one would notice if you slipped away.
At least, that's what you told yourself as you moved quietly through the shadows, your footsteps light against the forest floor. It didn't take long to find him. Izou sat near the edge of the island, overlooking the ocean as the last rays of sunlight painted the water in hues of gold and crimson.
You hesitated, your heart pounding in your chest, but before you could second guess yourself, you stepped into view. "Izou."
He turned at the sound of your voice, his expression shifting from surprise to something softer. "You're not exactly subtle, are you?". You couldn't help but smile faintly. "I've been told that before".
